Are there any sort of generic serial/SLIP packet drivers?
I've never dealt with SLIP but it seems to me that there should be a pretty straightforward way to use a serial port as an ethernet adapter. Of course the remote SLIP server would need to bridge the serial data to the actual network...
TO answer my own question apparantly yes: dosppp and slipper, at the very least.
Not sure how to configure either to be a direct serial connection though.
There might be something of use here: https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/PPP_configuration_on_linux_host. Also, there might be something in the ppp client that ships with Arachne. Seems to me you ought to be able to set up pppd on a modern box, pointing it to /dev/ttyS0 or so, and much the same with the DOS ppp client, but I don't really know the particulars.
You might be able to do that with PLIP, too, but I have even less guess about how that works.

You can configure a pppd server on a Linux box (or VM) or configure SLIRP on a shell session.

The collection contains a slip (8250) driver, as well as a plip - going by parallel would probably be faster

Has the DOS pppd readme, not sure where the actual pppd is - supports the 16550 UART buffer mode
Thanks everyone. I'll be able to make some real progress on this now that I've figured out that I installed a 74LS688 instead of the SN75185 the bill of materials specified on my self-assembled serial port card.
That was very frustrating.

It's a high-density floppy adapter and 16550+ serial interface, with on-board bios.
Works great, I'm probably a bigger fan of this than my xt-ide card.
