So I was given a lot of 5x Supermicro single CPU motherboards (Link Below) each with a Quad Core Xeon X33XX series and 2GB of RAM. They are MicroATX and look like they would make for a great Overpowered Windows XP machine or a pretty decent Windows 7 machine even. There is no onboard audio which honestly is great because I can put a Solid Audigy or Live PCI card in there. The big problem is there is no 16x PCIE Slot. The onboard video is 32MB Volari so I am sure it's 3D performance isn't much to speak about. It does have 2 8X slots which brings me to my question. So far the best GPU I can find that is built to be installed in a physical 8x slot is a Geforce 730 GT but they aren't common and pretty expensive for what they are. I looked at some Youtube videos on Gaming on a Geforce 730 and it wasn't half bad.

Does anyone have any other good options for a 8x PCI-E video card.

I was going to suggest modding the motherboard to allow 16x cards.

not exactly an option for this board. I assume pci-e risers are not an option?

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

I am open to options if they are cheap. I've looked at risers for other things but never considered them for video cards.

Are you referring to something like this?

Yep. Video card will work just fine.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Anyone aware of builds that feature one of these riser cards? Any benchmarks of the same card in an 8x slot vs a 16x slot?

EDIT: Almost immediately after I posted this I found this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJuj16gRoBI

Indicates a GTX 1080 in a slot that is physically 16x but 8x electrically has less then 1% of performance variance then having it in a slot that is also electrically 16x.

In theory you can shave a cards edge connector to 8x just be very careful doing it

Yes, I've done the PCIe shaving. Basically, use an exacto knife and start cutting the end of the PCIe 8x mechanical connector. Stop until the entire video card fits without issue, obviously without messing up anything else. Video card will link at 8x instead of 16x, which is trivial in most circumstances.

I would not try with some super heavy GPU's, though. Gravity will win eventually.
