It's the very first mention of anything I see in my system after startup, and it looks like: Loading Freedos _ and just hangs. Not sure whether it's the brand of sd card I'm using. Formatted in rufus. Also tried ms-dos and combinations of fat and fat32.

Oh, you're using Rufus ? Cool! 😀 FreeDOS is officially supported there, I think.
Maybe changing the compatibility seetings does help.
