Hi,
so which is the fastest ever ISA card for the Doom engine? I have a GD5429 ISA 1MB card that runs really well but I was thinking if the GD5434 chip or any others would be even faster (for example on the Cyrix 486DLC cpu).
Thank 😀

I'm not sure, but I think the GD5429 and 5434 will be very similar in performance. This is the biggest group of ISA cards I've seen in one benchmark chart:
http://vgamuseum.info/images/vlask/bench/quake320.png
the 5428 is at the top of the list, but the 5429 and 5434 are not tested, so no comparison.

Phil did a smaller comparison recently:
14 ISA and VLB graphics cards on a 486DX2 66

And some results from feipoa:
ISA 16-bit graphics card comparative performance and ranking
there's a 5434 here and it's the fastest of the bunch by a slight amount

Google is your friend. 😀

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Thank. I was thinking to find something like a 486SXL cpu plus fastest cache an isa card.

I have the Cirrus Logic cl-gd542986qc for 16-bit ISA (I run the thing on the computer with Intel 486DX2 66MHz and 8 MB RAM), and, unfortunately, Doom works slow, and so, I need to reduce the size of screen and play game with a small "window". Does this needs for some extra DOS side things to make it work faster?
I also heard from one man that I better to get an ISA card with a VLB bus.

You can dramatically improve performance with ISA bus overclocking.

I'd expect a 486DX2 and a GD5429 to make Doom run really good even in the ISA version. I remember having tried the same config with the VLB version and Doom ran really well. Obviously VLB might be another world but still the power of the 66Mhz cpu should "balance" the ISA slower speed as much as it becomes the limit itself.
Is it possible other things might be the problem (L2 cache, IRQ problems or whatever..)?

DX2 is barely playable even with decent VLB card.

Funny thing is that when Doom came out there were no faster CPUS than a 486

I'm not sure that any of those benches are really all that accurate. I mean, what exact card and other system specs were used?

There are generally quite a few different versions of cards with the same chipset... And then you have differences in memory, waitstates, etc.

Those charts only have one card of each type listed even though the different cards with the same chip may offer different performance levels.

I have an ET4000 card that has a "turbo" jumper on it. Enable that jumper and the speed of the card increases quite a bit.

With 486DLC you simple have Not enough Power.
Even a GD5420 would Suffice.

I use gd5420 Isa 1mb on am5x86 and can play all Titels in vga Resolution very well.

Future Shock, Doom.. Blood

If your System can’t copy Data fast enough to Video Memory a Faster Isa Card won’t help at all.

In a class of 500 I knew one person with a P60 in 1993

Sort of like owning a 286 in 1982
or a 486 in 1989

Doom was fairly playable with a UMC U5S-33 and ISA Trident TVGA-9000b At default (two notches below full screen) viewing size. Around mid-20s fps. It was not a bad experience, although that CPU is roughly on par with an Intel 486 SX40/SX2-50.

Back in 1994-95 I played Doom on a Cyrix 486DX-33, 8MB of RAM and an ISA Trident 8900D. It wasn't wonderful but I was able to play through the entire game with a reasonable frame rate after reducing screen size a bit.

I'd say a DX2-66 and a good VLB card while not ideal makes it very playable.

Yes, it's playable, but barely. And it gets very ugly on some maps and Ultra-Violence difficulty.

Maybe I remember wrong but I think it was running not perfect but acceptable at full window. I suppose it was the target machine for that time, wasn't it?

Overall, "period correct" machines are not enough to play id games comfortably.
