Board is a LuckyStar 6P2BX2. Installed the slotket+cpu+hsf and I got no POST, the LED light was stuck and there were no beeps. I tried reinstalling and reseating the slotket and the CPU a couple of times, and it didn't work. Strangely enough when I installed the Katmai P3 450 back in, I got the same behavior. It took removing and reinstalling everything on the board, including the RAM, AGP and PCI cards, clearing CMOS, and stubbornly trying to boot the board, I got it back working and now it doesn't hiccup at boot anymore.

What could be the issue here? Or is it normal behavior for 440BX to refuse booting with Celeron 900s?

Slotkets can be finicky. Are you sure it supports Coppermine core Celerons? It could be only supporting up to Celeron 533, which was the last Mendocino Celeron. Another thing to note is that the Celeron 900 uses the 100MHz FSB which the slotket might not support, although I bet that in that case it would probably run at 66MHz FSB.

In any case, check your motherboard for bulging capacitors, especially in area surround the CPU slot. Bad capacitors can lead to the system being unstable and not POSTing every time 😉.

Well.. I doubt that the Slotket is the issue here, it supports up to 133MHz apparently, and came with a Pentium III 700 on it.

I found the Manual for it and the latest bios, at the www.lucky-star.com.tw using the web archive, The manual states that it only supports Klamath,Mendocino,Deschutes,Katmai, and Covington. The latest bios appears to be from April 1999, so it looks like it the bios would probably have to be modded to add newer microcodes, and even then I don't think it is guaranteed that the VRM is to the correct specification to run a Coppermine CPU.

Thank you kindly for this information. Would I have better luck using the ABIT BE6-II board I have instead?

It should, I recommend picking up the latest bios from the abit FTP backup, ftp://91.121.194.115/pub/download/bios/be6-II/beh70.exe

On the one hand, this is a fun project for a rebuild and reinstall as it would give me the excuse I needed to get rid of WinMe and revert to Win98, so yay! On the other hand, I'm not really sure a Voodoo 3 would benefit much from upgrading from a PIII 450 to a Celeron 900 so there's that..

Many of the first 440BX boards do not have the VRM's to support Coppermine processors. I have an early revision Asus P2B that fits this. Their VRM's, apparently, only allow them to go as low as 1.8V or something, which is above spec for Coppermine (usually 1.65V). Looking at the picture of your slotket, it looks like it doesn't have a VRM on it, so that doesn't help either. The Powerleap slotkets, for example, have a VRM, so you can use Coppermines on boards that would not normally support it.

Your BE6-II doesn't have the issues.

I just noticed today that the SMD resistor to the upper left of the socket (to the upper left of the blue capacitor) is missing. I have two of these slotkets so I compared them, and it is indeed supposed to be there and gone. Not sure if that was the reason why it didn't work, but I've binned this slotket. Maybe I should try again with the other slotket.
