The big passive(?) one on the right, with the massive heat pipes. No markings or branding on it anywhere.

I'm actually wondering if it's supposed to have a fan on it. It came in a Core 2 Quad system that had already been pretty disassembled. There was an oversized fan and a couple wire clips rattling around in the case loose but I can't figure out if it was supposed to clip onto this cooler somehow. Doesn't look like it to me.

Do you guys think it's a decent match for a Q6600, or should I use the wimpy-looking stock Intel HSF I also have here? Not planning to overclock it. The Q9300 I have in my games machine doesn't seem to run all that hot.

Incidentally it came horribly slathered with the goopiest thermal paste I've ever seen. Someone must have thought they were putting jam on a sandwich or something.

The metal clips are used to mount a large fan onto that heatsink. The intrusions in the metal fins are for to hooking the metal clips into, the extensions of the clips should go into the holes on the edge of your fan.
It's kinda difficult to explain.

At least, that's how my Scythe Mugen II works.

Ah sweet, that looks exactly like the fan I've got, with the same clips.

What an awkward design, I was totally wondering if somebody had bodged it together out of old parts when I tried to figure it out. They could have made it a lot less shonky-looking.

I remember these coolers being all the rage in the late 2000s and they worked well, many of these old coolers are still pretty good for modern use if you can find everything needed to mount them onto newer boards. If it handles old Q6600s that have been nuked then it will handle almost anything.

^This.

They can also keep cooling the CPU effectively as dust accumulates, requiring less maintenance. They can be an absolute pain to mount though and I remember my Mugen II basically requiring me to have at least 3 hands, I don't know how I got it in there 🤣!
And you'll need to make sure the case is wide enough for that towering monster (or live with the side panel removed 🤣).

But these are fantastic coolers, very silent as well.

Any 120mm fan will work, that's why the funny clips.
You can also purchase a 2nd clip and have a push pull setup.
