Hello all. Long time lurker, first time poster (and account for that matter). I apologize if this is posted in the wrong area, but I felt like this was the best place to ask.

I'm currently in a situation where I have two computers set up (my main rig and an old pentium). I'm looking for a way to connect my one PS/2 keyboard to both computers. I've looked rather extensively and come up with plenty of options for splitters where it offers one Male end split into two Female ends, but not the other way around. I'm wondering if anybody here would be able to tell me where I could find such a thing, or hell, if they even exist. I honestly don't know.

In case anyone wonders, while it has crossed my mind, I don't need a KVM switch. I'm able to connect both computers to my monitor since it has both DVI and VGA and sound on my main rig is set up through headphones and the older rig gets a pair of speakers for itself. I'm fine with having two different mice since they don't take up much space, really the only issue I have is the keyboard.

Any help would be appreciated!

Yeah, those are usually for use with laptops where the mouse and keyboard PS/2 port is the same physical port and you need a "splitter" to break it out in to separate PS/2 mouse and keyboard (the port is usually wired so that you can plug a mouse into the port directly without the splitter, but need the splitter for keyboard).

I'm sorry I don't know how to put this without sounding sarcastic (I'm not trying to be, but text can only convey so much), but, yeah... you do. KVM is your solution. You might not need the "V" or "M" part of it, but you need some sort of switch for your keyboard. It doesn't have to be one of those fancy electronic switching ones either, it could be as simple as those old 80's/90's style physical switch jobbys, but... yeah. Sorry.

Agree, physical switch or KVM. There is no way to connect one keyboard to two PCs with simple splitter cable.

Well, that sucks, but at least I know now. I had a hunch that was the case. I'll finagle some other solution together then. Thanks for the replies!

I couldn't find such an item, but...

You can buy PS/2 connectors and make your own splitter. If you can't find the connectors individually, scavenge the cables off a couple old keyboards from Goodwill, or even the trash. Use a continuity tester to check which wires go to which pins. If you don't have a continuity tester, get a couple batteries, a flashlight bulb and some wire. 😀

You could try using the cords off mice, but I'm not sure if they have all the same wires connected.

For the socket, if you can't find the part to buy, you could salvage one from an old motherboard, or even a PS/2 to USB adapter.

Your local dump might let you grab a couple things, or you could ask a local computer repair shop if they have any junk they want to get rid of. Maybe you know someone who has old parts lying around that they don't need any more.

Yes, of course such a cable can be built, but there is just one problem.
If you do build one and connect one keyboard to two motherboards, most likely you'll fry both motherboards, as you'll be connecting the 5V power supplies together.
So I don't think nobody really wants to build this even it is possible.

Now, on the other hand, if you put a double-throw 3- or 4-pole switch there, you can select which PC connects to 5V, clock and data wires, and it would work.
But then it would not be called a splitter cable anymore, it would be called keyboard selector.

On the other hand, hot-plugging keyboards can't really be recommended even if it works most of the time.
