I actually bought a Quickshot QS-201 on eBay a year or so ago. It was being sold as an "NES controller". Got it really cheap and it turned out to be almost brand new. We had one with our first Packard Bell 486 system back in the early\mid 90s, so I had to grab it. It certainly isn't the easiest to use though. 😀
There is the Sidewinder (pad and joy) from Microsoft that uses a digital protocol instead of classic gameport pots and buttons. They actually are fairly interesting as the joy uses Hall sensors but there is no official DOS driver.

This looks like a high end model, but I'm afraid way too new (early 2000s). Can it give me any trouble with DOS and Win9x? Do I need a DOS driver for any gameport controllers?
Take your pick. I'm thinking #1 for the sentiments and # 4 for the functions.
I can't say anything about DOS, but in W98 this should work, it has a gameport (with adapter to USB) and Logitech has good support for their older models, look for the model and if it's included in the Logitech Gaming Software 4.6 (or perhaps earlier versions as long as they are W98 compatible) you should have no troubles with it.
I tried different versions of el cheapo joysticks back in the 90's. Untill I finally had enough and bought a Wingman extreme in 1995. I wore the directional hat out, within a couple of years playing Descent. It was the best joystick that I ever had. So good that I have bought Logitech ever since that time, as the only maker/brand of joysticks. The one I had back then was this:
