I'm currently planning to build a nice Windows XP i have partially the hardware, so i will stick with those even that isn't the best performer.
I know that the 8600 is DX10 capable but it will be used on games with DX9 or older.
Here is my hardware roster.

  • ASUS M2N-X
  • Athlon 64 3000+ or Athlon 64 X2 4200+
  • Corsair CX430(i don't think that this PSU will not be enough)
  • 2x1GB DDR2 800
  • 500GB SATA 2 HDD(or a maybe one sshd)
  • SATA DVD-RW Drive

Im really hanging on the GPU and MAYBE i will buy one Audigy2 ZS with the front drive.
As i mentioned before, i'm not looking for one ultimate build, just a really capable one, maybe GF8600, 7600, 7900 etc..
Something for NFSU,NFSU2,The Sims 2,Vampire The Masquerade:Bloodlines, Half Life2, Far Cry,FEAR(i guess the audigy zs will be nice with this one)

I used to have a rig very similar to your stated stats:
ASUS M2N (but different part after the main model number)
Athlon64 2.4GHz
2x1GB DDR2-800
500GB WD SATA drive
I think an IDE DVD drive.
GF8600 with iirc 256MB RAM or something?

And Windows XP.

It ran most games fine, but BF2 would make the system BSoD a lot and I ended up just building another rig instead of fixing this problem (BF2 was basically the main reason I build it in the first place).

Games like FEAR, UT3 and a couple other contemporary games seemed to run pretty much fine I think.

Whats missing in your collections?

I had lots of reliability issues with 8600GT, other than that it's was a OK card, it tends to be faster than the previous gen (like a 7900GT) on later DX9 titles, but on older ones it's more often not.

if not going for period accuracy I would consider a more reliable card, like a GT 220 or something.

What about the old memory leakage thing ? I vaguely remember the GF8/9 chips were said to have some sort of
problem of running out of memory under certain circumstances.

Usually in older builds i tend to stick with period correct hardware unless i cant find it or i cant find with a reasonable price(for example i will not buy a voodoo 5 5500 for the same price that i would get a modern pc)

But since this hardware is not old enough and the period correct parts are available and cheap i will stick with period correct hardware, there is also drivers issues with some older games, for example the rendering glitches on Far Cry.

I never heard about it, and back in the day i don't remember having any issue at all, it wouldnt be something caused only on apple hardware?
