Specs:

CPU: Pentium Pro 200mhz 256k L2 Cache
RAM: 128MB of 64MB of FPM and 64MB of EDO RAM (I know, bloody E-Bay seller gave me the wrong RAM)
HBA: Adaptec PCI Ultra160 SCSI Controller
Sound: AWE32 CT:3670
2D Card: ATI Mach64 GX PCI 2MB
OS: Windows95C/OSR 2.5

So, when I try to start up Duke3D in Windows95's DOS mode, it refuses to run (Hangs after the text loading screen) on any VESA modes (runs fine on non-VESA mode). Even when loading UniVBE, Duke3D still refuses to load properly. This works fine with a Pentium 3 450mhz with a GeForce2 MX AGP, and a Sound Blaster Live, so I am wondering why it isn't working right here.

Would be great if anybody could help me out, if you need any more info, don't hesitate to ask.

Does it even work in plain DOS?

I have not attempted that, as I do not have a good installation of DOS at hand. I imagine it would, however, as it's obviously a problem with the DOS mode in Windows not having the appropriate VESA modes available. Quake is unable to go to 640x480 as well. Perhaps there are some settings I can tweak with DOS mode? I will try a few things.

Solution:

This does work in regular DOS mode IF you load the UniVBE drivers first. Sound was also another can of worms for me. It will work in a DOS window if you load UniVBE upon system startup into autoexec.bat.

Thanks for your help, eli, it did somewhat lead me onto the right path in the end.

Is it possible that the Mach64 card has issues with VESA modes or that it needs some program/TSR to use them properly?

Absolutely not, as it is currently working 100% fine with Duke3D and Quake VESA modes IN a DOS window.

Try loading UniVBE when loading windows (put it in the autoexec.bat and load both UniVBE and UVConfig). This was my solution.
