I'm only getting 55-ish frames per second @ 1024x768 in Opengl on demo1.dm2. This is on a P3 933MHz, Voodoo 3 3000 OC'd to 183MHz (3500 speeds) but seems to make little difference vs. 166MHz. It is a VIA Apollo Pro chipset, 512MB 133MHz RAM (did try 256MB). I'm also using an Audician 32 Plus. A review I saw has this running at 70+ FPS. I have V-Sync disabled in both the driver and in Quake 2. I'm using the latest official 3dfx driver.

Should add that I have used a variety of VIA 4in1 drivers and updated to the last beta BIOS from the last non-beta BIOS.

Oh, and that review was 70+ FPS on a P3 500: https://www.anandtech.com/show/272/11

Nevermind. I did a full reinstall of Windows, VIA drivers provided by ASUS, and I used the amigamerlin drivers, working good now although I don't remember what was really different between the first install.

P3 933MHz, Voodoo 3 3000, default Opengl, 1024x768, demo1.dm2
Vsync off: 79 fps
Vsync on: 75 fps

Voodoo 3 3000 overclocked to 183MHz (3500 speeds), demo1.dm2
Vsync off: 88 fps
Vsync on: 84 fps

Looks like anything beyond a P3 500 doesn't do any good if you compare this to the review. Only overclocking helps.
Interesting that Vsync on is only a 4 FPS hit.

I did do the crusher as well and at the default clock speed of the GPU, I was getting about +10 fps versus the review @ P3 500. I'm sure that is because 933MMHz makes the difference processing more objects in play (i.e. enemies, weapons fire, rockets, lasers, etc.).

WOW. I guess that was the first time I benchmarked Quake 2.

Ah, I did not see that but I was focusing on the P3. Thanks. Now I have no reservations of switching the P3 933 with the P2 400. I'm going to playing DOS games with this mostly and the P2 400 has an unlocked multiplier so I can go lower as I need to.

at 1024*768 you are already pushing the voodoo3 to near its limit, so a faster cpu doesn't help much. at 640*480 it would be much faster.
i remember getting ~240fps in crusher with p3s-1.4g and geforce2, phew.
