Hi!

I recently came across my old copy of King's Quest VI, but haven't been able to get it working completely in Windows XP. It's the standalone CD version, not a collection or anthology version. I can run the DOS version fine under DOSbox, but I want the improved graphics under Windows (I remember them from back when I ran the game under Windows 95). I've tried all of the suggestions regarding VDMSound, BAT files, copying RESOURCE.AUD, editing SIERRA.INI, etc. (I don't have an HDLOGO.AVI to delete), and I can get something running with VDMSound, but it isn't the enhanced Windows version - I don't get the high-res portraits, and the intro doesn't play the intro video, just text.

Has anyone had any success getting the enhanced Windows version working? Again, I'm not working with the collection version; mine is the standalone "Multimedia PC" CD version.

Thanks!

VDMSound is only for running DOS programs in a command prompt window in Windows. It won't help you with any native Windows apps like the Windows version of KQ6.

KQ6 was one of the first CD-ROM games I ever had. I haven't tried playing it since I only had Win95. What happens if you try to run the setup program on the CD?

The problem with the Windows version of KQ6 in XP is that when you start the executable, WOW starts and then justs hangs in memory. You can get the Windows version to start in XP if you replace the Windows shortcut with a batch file and start the bat with VDMS. This does work, but will lock up if it tries to play the logo AVI at the start, or the intro TOON.AVI.

One other problem is that the cursor view does not change with its function unless you move it out of the game's window and back in. These problems will be solved by playing the game with Windows 3x in the next version of DOSBox.

First I'm warned that no 256-color mode was found. After I click past that, I'm asked whether I want to install to disk or play from CD. After choosing "install to disk" I'm asked where to install it, and it starts copying files. Then it pauses to ask if I want to install MS Video For Windows, and when I say no it asks if I want to install the "Making of..." and "Coming soon" videos anyway (I don't, so I clicked No). Then it finishes copying files and tells me "Installation is complete, a program group has been created, click the shortcut to play."

I did get it to stop pestering me about the lack of a 256-color mode by copying the entire CD to my hard drive, making a BAT file to run the setup program, and running the BAT file with VDMSound.

Neither of those AVI files are present, either in the installed folder or anywhere on the CD.

At this point I'm mostly just curious if anyone has gotten the enhanced portraits and such to appear under XP. I guess I'll just wait for the next version of DOSbox and see if I even still have Windows 3.x laying around somewhere...

Yes, but with the cursor bug.

I tried a bunch of stuff to get it to work in XP, but was unable to. I guess VDMS is the key, but I didn't want to reinstall it. I'll just wait to tackle this game again until I get around to playing with Win 3.x in DOSBox.
