The CD version is in fact 1.07. Difference from 1.06 floppy/download version is extra animations and sounds.
Thought it was a bit peculiar that it at least started with earlier versions of DOSbox, and then ceased functioning at all under later ones. I wonder what changed.
CD is titled: ARENA_CD

The Elder Scrolls, Chapter I: ArenaVersion 1.07 CD-ROM----------------------------------------------------------------------+ Hot keys not documented in the manual:Shift + C = Recast spellCtrl + left arrow or right arrow = Slide left or right'-' and '+' = scroll inventory up or down in charsheet.Shift + J = Standing long jump.F3 key = toggle damage response. There are three choicesavailable: "Normal Roll", "Severe Roll", and "Cross Hatch".F4 key = toggle message pixellation. If you would prefermessages to pop on to the screen rather than pixellate in, clickthe F4 key. Clicking the key again will toggle the messages backto pixellation.'-' during game play on a fast machine (Pentium, DX4) = slow down'+' during game play on a fast machine (Pentium, DX4) = speed up+ A Pentium slowdown has been included. To slow down game play for aPentium, modify the arena.bat file by adding:"-delay:#"to the end of line that starts with @Awhere # is an integer between 1 and 9. 1 is fast, 9 is slow.We recommend 3 as a good speed. If, after starting the game on your Pentium using this feature, youfind the speed still is not right, you may adjust the delay using the+ and - keys.+ Getting stuck in a wall: if this happens, check the automap - ifthere is an open tile adjacent to you, then just save your game, exit, and start up again, restoring the game. You will find yourself out ofthe wall. If there are no open tiles nearby, you will have to restorea previous game. We recommend that you do not Passwall into astairwell, or you will almost certainly get stuck.+ Can't get an Artifact Quest: This seems to be related to picking theStart New Game option while in the middle of another game. We recommendthat you do not choose this option. If you do find that you havereached at least level 5, and you still get no Artifact Quest whenasking townsfolk for Rumors - General, then you may enable these questsby hitting:[ALT] F5in combination. (a message should appear)NOTE: This will _not_ enable another quest if you already possess anartifact, and it could potentially ruin an Artifact Quest if you arecurrently on one. This fix is only intended to be used _once_, ifat all.+ A general helpful tip is to save your game often, and keep one backupsave file handy.+ Many problems have been solved simply using the boot disk option fromthe install.+ Player can now rename spells (left-click on the spell name)+ Due to popular demand, spellcasters can now delete spells fromtheir spellbooks. Simply go to the second page of your charactersheet, click on spellbook, double-click on the spell you wish todelete, and when the spell description appears choose the new"delete" option.
--------------------------------------------------------------------We are currently in production for the second chapter of the ElderScrolls, Daggerfall, expected to completed in early '95. Daggerfallwill feature the same open-endedness and breadth of area to explorethat Arena had, but will also include far more NPC interaction, afaster and more flexible 3D engine, and a more sophisticated storyline. All in all, Daggerfall will give you more opportunity to roleplay yourcharacter as you choose. We are very excited about it, and wouldappreciate any and all suggestions for it.If you want to hold onto a character for the sequel, save files *.0x,where x equals the number of the saved game (notice that 0 is the firstsaved slot, and 9 is the last). Note that there will be several filesto save.Thank you for playing the Elder Scrolls, Chapter I: Arena.-- Bethesda Softworks
