hey guys, i have a project that i have been working on for a while now, about a year or so, my build specs are
asus p3v4x motherboard via apollo pro 133
intel p3 1ghz slot 1
2x256mb crucial 133
sound blaster audigy 2 zs
awe64 value
460 watt enermax psu
running windows 98se

i have purchase and tested many graphics cards with this platform over the past year, tnt2, rage fury pro, fx5500, fx5700ve, geforce4 ti4400, voodoo3 3000 agp
when running the later cards such as the fx5700ve and the geforce4 ti 4400, i get massive frame dips in most games, games like quake 3 @ 1024x768 max settings im averaging 78fps
games like need for speed 4 high stakes, the fps is all over the place, i know the game is 65fps locked, but i cant keep a constant fps,
i have tried numerous drivers, reinstalled windows 98se a few times, tested the newer cards on a newer p4 platform, so i know its not the cards
can anyone with the same motherboard that i have tell me what card you are running, what tweaks did you do to get the best performance from this board.
i went from a 650mhz p3 100fsb to a 1ghz p3 133fsb and really didn't notice much of a boost in performance, i really don't want to have to abandon this motherboard, but
if i cant get the fps up in most games then im going to look for something better

asus p3b-f, intel pIII 1000/133/256 thermaltake golden orb, 2x crucial 256mb pc133, nvidia geforce 3, aureal vortex 2, IDE to SD adapter samsung 128gb evo
asus p3v4x, intel pIII 650/100/256, 256mb pc133, 3dfx voodoo 3 3ooo, awe64 value!, 80gb hdd

Anandtech had an issue with performance on this motherboard due to the AGP GART drivers. Have you installed 4.02 or later of those drivers?

yeah i have tried a few versions of the 4in1 driver, even installed the GART driver manually through device manager, i really dont know whats holding this motherboard back, with the voodoo3 3000 it seems to run older games really well, its not hitting the higher fps in quake 3, but in older games like need for speed 3 its pretty smooth, but when i switch it out with the geforce4 ti 4400, then run the same game, its very sluggish and laggy, and im getting a crazy amount of fps dips, im starting to think the apollo pro 133a is just trash and i should have went with a 440bx or an i820 chipset, im going to shop around and look for a new motherboard, right now other then the asus p3v4x, the only other slot 1 motherboard i have is a micro star ms-6111but that board has the intel 440lx chipset and im pretty sure 333mhz @ 66mhz fsb is the max on that board

As for NFS: High Stakes, this game is just terrible at D3D rendering, it's optimized for 3dfx Glide. Replace the trash driver that came with it from the one of the "Modern Patch" and the game will run much better. I faced the same issues especially with GeForce cards.

As for Quake 3: you get 78 fps at 1024x768 with max. settings, and that on a P3 1 GHz. Sounds pretty well to me...

so would you use the 3dfx voodoo 3 3000 or the geforce4 ti 4400 ? or one of the other cards i listed above? im thinking about using the voodoo3 and maybe use the geforce4 ti 4400 in a p4 build

That would be much more 'era appropriate'.

i just installed the geforce4 ti 4400 in another machine, 3ghz p4 2gb ram windows xp, the performance was pretty damn good, about 3 times the fps in quake 3, need for speed high stakes pegged at 64fps, never dropped bellow, and unreal tournament i hit 145-175 with some dips in the 80's, this tells me that my p3 is just bottle necking all
these faster cards, the old voodoo3 3000 agp is doing a really good job with my p3 rig, i got a few socket 478 motherboards and a few p4's, i think ill build a p4 2.66ghz and use the geforce4 ti 4400, install windows 98se and use a aureal vortex 2 for sound, should offer a little dos support
