So, I picked up a used computer that has a Dallas Real Time Clock, which is of course dead.

It is model DS12B887.

I searched eBay and found some fairly new ones (date code is 2016), but they are model DS12B887+.

Is the DS12B887+ compatible with the DS12B887 (no +)?

I would rather just replace the battery than do the external battery mod.
