I just bought this excellent condition 286 PC from 1991 but CMOS battery is dead and it will freeze when I enter the "System configuration setup" menu - see all the fields are blank and it freezes on this page.
I seem to be able to skip the CMOS battery error and it then tries to boot from 5.25" drive but I have no such a diskette so I can not verify if it boots.
I tried to disconnect the HDD but it did not help
Anyone knows how what could be the reason? ant ideas how to fix it?

I'd start by replacing the battery. I have encountered a few older machines that I was unable to enter setup if the machine saw the battery was dead.

Already ordered DS12887A+ to replace the original soceted Dallas DS1287A
I know there is a trick to fix the original DS1287A but I don't have a dremel tool and a socket for CR2032.

I'm afraid I will need a 5.25" setup disk to actually configure the BIOS settings, and I don't have one.
