Thanks for this useful hint! I removed the battery yesterday and hopefully saved my unit from a premature end this way. Also good to know that the battery is not needed if you are just using it for games. Won't insert it again, then!

Good to know that about that toggle on the SC-88. I'm only using this Roland equipment for DOS gaming, but I have an SC-88, SC-55, and MT-32 daisy chained in sequence so that I can use both MIDI inputs on the SC-88 and have the signals cascade to the other modules without having to implement messy switches or fuss with changing cables all the time.

The batteries in my SC-55, SC-55MK2 and SC-88 Pro had definitely been leaking, no damage to the board and no leaking residue on the blade in the battery holder............

Does that cause any added noise on the line level outputs that you've heard? I also use these same DC-DC converters in most of my classic gaming consoles. However, when I installed them into the Sega Genesis, I had odd beeps and static that could be heard that was never present before. I also had odd issues with Sonic 3 locking up randomly with them in place. I ended up replacing them back out and putting in higher 2amp versions of the standard 7805 VRs. But that is the only console I've done that with and had issues.
So yeah I'm curious as I have some still on hand and wouldn't mind trying them in my MT-32 or MT-200.

I got my SC-55 a few days ago, this is correct - it's a CR2032 battery. Mine was a Toshiba brand specifically - not like it matters, my 88Pro and 55 are now running Energizer batteries so they Keep Going and Going™ 🤣

I found my first SC-55 for about 40 euros locally about a week ago and I have not checked the battery.
Does anyone know if I would have to worry about this with a CM-500 or MT-200? No, eh? There's no memory features on the CM-500 at all IIRC, and the MT-200 saves everything to floppy disks...again, IIRC.

MT-200 has a larger tabbed coin battery in it and it is used near as I can tell to save the RTC information in the sequencer. But I would imagine it could go bad and leak like anything else. I took them out of both of the MT-200s I have and installed standard 2032 coin cell holders and put new maxell 2032 batteries in each.

My recently acquired SC-55 also had a leaking battery. It wasn't much but I still removed it

you can also chose not to install a battery at all - it will not hurt playback you just won't be able to save settings. I did not install batteries again in mine since all I am using them are for gaming.

Good to know, thanks. I already removed the old one, because it started leaking.
There is another MIDI sound device with a battery backup that is the Casio LD-80 here which runs the internal RAM memory for the custom drum kit setup and drum song recording. Have a look at it:
I did replace the battery with another good one I have and it should work better. The one that is in has a bump in the top and may not work correctly.
