i am running win95osr1 on amd386dx-40 and 16mb of ram. while i didn't have much expectation on ie5.5, several applications(namely acdsee and k-meleon which i can remember, and a few others) refused to install or run and demanded updated dlls from ie5, so i installed it.
after a lengthy setup, i tried running it and it simply crashed at launch, and the reported file to cause the crash is shlwapi.dll. the same crash also occurs when i tried changing ie property and apply settings.
now, is the problem caused by a corrupted system, ie5.5 being incompatible with this version of win95, or simply would not run on a 386? has anyone tried the same thing with successful experience?
and, can i get any of k-meleon, opera, retrozilla or other decent browser working on 386 and win95?

Well, I once ran both IE 3.01 and IE 5.0 on Windows 3.11 on a 386DX40.

Not sure if that answers your questions, though. 😐
Maybe IE 5.5 requires a 486 instructions set (a 486DLC could work)..

Win 98SE also came with that version and required a 486
(strictly speaking, some people made 98 run on 386, too).

Today retrozilla would be your best but but I'd post on the retrozilla forum on MSFN and ask. If it isn't already compiled for i386 then ask and mabye a build will be posted.

yeah it may be one possibility, that ms dropped support for 386 in ie5.5. but the 16bit version of ie can also be different from the 32bit version, right?
still i wanna see if anyone managed to run win95 version of ie5.0 or 5.5 on 386...
but again, i didn't expect much from ie5 as already said, its some applications that demand updated dlls from ie5.

According to Wikipedia, the required CPU is a DX2-66 CPU.

i also saw that in the readme file, but such hard requirements are not always precise.
just think, even the 16bit versions of ie5 listed a 486dx2-66 as requirement, yet it worked on 386s.
