I tried setting the fan to 100% in the performance table. Unfortunately this doesn't take effect until the drivers are loaded. So the fan whines until then. I'm just going to run it off a molex plug.

Regarding Quadro / FireGL vs Radeon / GeForce, I was looking at this just other day.

However they tested with some specific Quadro and FireGL drivers. I'm not sure if that is the cause of the speed difference. I've just been running regular GeForce drivers without issue. Haven't done any comparative tests.

Hmmm, I will poke around the BIOS with a hex editor and try to find the booting frequencies, voltage, and fan speed. At least running off the molex alleviated the problem.

The youtube happenings really don't require much more comment here: this thread is a resource to people who decide to mod the card. I'd rather keep the Quadro vs Geforce discussion out and I'm sorry I brought it up.

Yep better keep topic in this way 😀
I'am interested which brand and speed (ns) DDR modules got FX2000 vs 5800 vs 5800U. Is is same or not?
Here's info about basic 5800 https://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/yaji … ma/1027389.html
5800 ultra http://ixbtlabs.com/articles2/gffx/leadtek-5800u.html
But can't search FX2000.

Maybe iteresting compare http://ixbtlabs.com/articles2/profcards/quadro2000.html

They all seem to have the same marking of "1K", I'd be willing to bet it's the same for the fx2000. Interesting thought from that Japanese page you linked...

DDR2 memory is Samsung's "K4N26323AE-GC1K". 1 M word × 32 bits × 4 banks, one chip 16 MB. By mounting four on the front and back, 128 MB is realized. Incidentally, "1K" at the end of the model number is not in the data sheet, it may be a model that was offered early for NVIDIA

That may be why I couldn't find the data sheet. It also makes me wonder if they were binned somehow and me hitting 500 was just a fluke.

On the weekend a new cooler arrived and I've been trying it on. I decided to "downgrade" the card to a GeForce FX 5800 (still an upgrade from the Quadro FX 1000) in order to keep it as a single slot card and avoid heat issues with the VRAM and the RDRAM so close to each other.

The cooler does a great job and is very silent. I suspect my success with such small coolers has to do with the CPU used in my machine, with a more powerful CPU the card would be able to stretch its legs a bit more and it would get way hotter (I see this effect now when benchmarking a Coppermine 1000 vs a Tualatin 1400)

That looks good. What temps is it hitting?

My p3 1.4s really holds it back my fx3000 compared to a A64 3400 clawhammer. IIRC 3dmark 2k1se gets 9.5k with p3. Then around 18k with the A64

Maxes out between 58 ºC and 60 ºC. Compared to the stock, lapped heatsink I had before, this one is a lot more silent: I am happy!

Looks good to me!

My card has been working flawlessly for lots of games. Neat to finally have NV30 to mess with.

Thanks! The cooler is actually surprisingly good, quiet, and cheap. I will order another one to replace the stock GeForce Ti 4600 heatsink, which has this annoying high pitch sound I don't care for.

And yeah, I think the same. I had wanted to mess with NV30 for a long time, if only because everyone talks so much smack about it. I wanted to experience it first hand.

EDIT: forgot to mention, I got a hold of a cheap Quadro4 980 XGL. It needs a small repair before I can use it, but its overall in good shape. I think this is the earliest high-end Quadro which can be modded into a GeForce via strap flashing. Once I get it up and running I'll tinker around and post results.

Sure, post the Quadro's BIOS and I'll look at it.

Hello, affordable GeForce FX 5800/5800U...

@candle_86: I have just added strap values for the Quadro FX 500 to the TL;DR post. NiBiTor doesn't officially support NV34, so you need a hex editor to alter the DeviceID. It may well be the case that just flashing the straps will work, though. If you try, let us know.

Will do, also I scored I got 3 FX 3450's (6800GS SLI) for 40 bucks, just gotta figure out those straps 🤣

Great Job @slivercr!

Is this Method applicable only to Mod Quadros to GeForces or can we "Upgrade" Cards eg. a GF3 to GF3 Ti500 without Resistor mod them?

Thanks!

The technique only works from NV18 and onwards, more or less anything after and including the GF4 8x AGP refresh. That's when NVIDIA added the required straps that we're working with in this thread.

You can "upgrade" cards as you say, but this will only change the Device ID: frequencies, locked pipelines, etc. won't be changed. I focus on Quadro to GeForce because I found a lot of cheap Quadro cards in my area, including some that are equivalent to expensive GeForce cards like the 5800 and the 6800; and because there is some performance to be gained for retro gaming that goes beyond overclocking.

Hello, affordable GeForce FX 5800/5800U...

I fear not so affordable due to recent hyping from different sources. Well, at least it won't skyrocket to total bananas price like 5800U. Yet.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Bit of an update for candle_86: I tried the "straps only" method on a Quadro4 980 XGL, since its also unsupported by NiBiTor, and it didn't work. You will have to change the card's DeviceID with a hex editor and then flash the straps.

I have also added strap values for the Quadro4 980 XGL to the TL;DR.
