So ..you have Thinkpad 600 /E /X ...and just want to install the OS on a CF ..
On this one it is real tricky ..even if you have the bare bones caddy.
Trial and error ...and I came to the conclusion ...one of those double adapters from Ebay is the way to go.
I suspect you could use both CF slots ..IF the CD Drive was removed ..though I have not tried this.
I think if both CF card B and CD drive were in at the same time there would be a conflict on the IDE bus.
So ..I created some edited photos with text to show how and why the dual adapter is best for this job.

Thanks for the pictures, I might try that with my 600X at some point 😀

I suspect that the IDE bus configuration should work with the Dual CF card when both slots are populated, I always thought that the CD drive on these was on the secondary IDE?

You might well be correct TW..regarding the IDE bus ..
As I said ..not tried this as yet ..
you might beat me to it
🤣
I'll take the opportunity one again to thank you for the restore ISOs ..

btw if anyone has genuine restore CDs for earlier model 600 and 600E thinkpads and would be prepared to clone them ..I would be very interested.
Thanks to TW ..I now have restore CDs for the 600X ...win95 and 98 ...though they do restore in FAT ..
for FAT32 you have to do a manual install ...as the restore media re-format the HD in FAT.

It is possible to restore using the CD discs ...then mount the resulting drive in a second machine using a USB interface ...
copy all the drives contents,,including the 'hidden' files to a pre-prepared fat 32 partitioned/formatted drive and providing the new HD is active ..it will boot just fine..and all of IBMs factory software will be present and correct with few if any driver issues..
