Hello everyone.

I have a problem in Mortal Kombat 2's SOUND directory. When I click each MIDI file (for example, DEADP.mid), I can't hear them and they end up with an error saying that "Windows Media Player can not recognize this file." What should I do? 😕

Sincerely, Roozy

That's because they are not MIDI files. They just happen to have MID extension, but the content is something proprietary. Maybe someone had figured out how to convert them, you can poke around the internets to check.

P.S. I find it cool how MK2 has 5 separate soundtracks - for FM (.SBL), GUS (.GVS), General MIDI (.MID), MT-32/LAPC (.LAP) and AWE32/64 (.AWE). It's the most I've seen in a single game.

P.P.S. Welcome to the forum. 😀

I tried to search "how to convert pc-dos midi files to windows general midi", and Mirsoft had a PC Game Midi Ripping Guide, but it didn't help.
I went to other guides; but they didn't help too.
What converters did they use?

I've used the Mirsoft MIDI ripping guide before. You connect the 2 computers with MIDI couplers. Then configure the game to play GM on the playback computer and record MIDI with midi-ox in Windows or arecordmidi in Linux on the recording computer.

Win 11 - Intel i7-1360p - 32 GB - Intel Iris Xe - Cubilux 7.1 USB

Stretch, I'm using 2 laptops, not desktop computers.

EDIT: I'm saying, how do I do it only with software converters (non-midi to midi)?

Run the game in Dosbox and setup MIDI capture. Ctrl-Alt-F8 to start and again to stop.

I tried it and it worked.
Went to check on "C:\Users\Roozy\AppData\Local\DOSBox\capture" to see if the MIDI file is there.
Opened the MIDI file to Anvil Studio, it worked. Attachment has been sent.

The attachment mk2_midi.zip is no longer available

Great, then to record most of the MIDI files, you can follow this guide to enable cheats Mortal Kombat II DOS Cheat Menu Simplified Access if you know how to use a hex editor.

You can enable cheats, disable the timer, enable 1 hit kills P1 and start a 2 player game. After you record for several minutes, you can defeat P2 and then go to a new level with different background music.
