Are these useable for something 'useful' in a normal (retro) computer ?

Not really sure what their original purpose were, but... 😕

it may be for industrial use or something like that i think, if that's the case, it may need specific drivers. from what i know, these might be used to save specific data to a (kinda) non-volatile memory that's not a harddisk and is writtable (not like rom or eprom that were common)

There is some information about it here:
https://www.arm-blog.com/ext4-journal-nvram-card/
But I admit most of it is above my head.
you can have a really fast windows swap file ;] or as just pointed out a fast journal - starting from ext3 i believe and some others - so its not for the really old machines; its also unclear what kind of interface this offers;
it's pci-x, so it may be using either a custom bus to connect on the computer, or may be using IDE, SCSI or SATA

These were actually made by the company I work for but not the division I work for.
Checking to see if I can get access to the documentation and/or drivers.
I found a site that has a link to the datasheet:
https://www.artisantg.com/TestMeasurement/737 … CI_NVRAM_Module
And here is a listing for one that is even cheaper:

Ok, so judging by that first link, this looks like to be on par with those olden mpeg decoder cards, from before video cards could do it themselves or whatever... Regarding current usefulness I mean.
.....old NVRAM cards, the Micro Memory MM-5425CN/256. This is a PCI-X card consisting of 256MB ECC DRAM memory backed up by 2 rechargeable batteries of 1950mAh. As the cards are using PCI-X....
History and usage:
This type of card was used back in the days when SSD caching and memory (especially ECC) was quite expensive. They were primarily aimed at fileservers or filesystems that were IO intensive so the journal could be placed on the card and alleviate the IO from the journal to the card.
And didn't notice the PCI-X, which makes it even less useful, IMHO.
Oh well, learning something new each day on this forum, heh... 😀
Thankyou all for the input!
