Picked up a lot of 10 Sound Blaster 16's off of eBay for a ridiculously low price. I won't need to worry about sound cards for my retro builds for quite a few years, or decades.

The postman came today:

Saw the Aztech card. I already had this 826, but I couldn't get the wavetable to work at all. This one was going cheap, so snaffled it up to see if I can get wavetable working here. And then I saw the seller's other stuff. He'd posted this MusicQuest in the "Music and instruments" section and no one was interested despite very low price. I was 😉

Will be testing these tonight. If the MusicQuest is working I'll be checking with a musician I know. He's still using a DOS 6 / MusicQuest system for his work - not because it's retro but because he spent years figuring out how this works and is convinced he could never to that again - and it's no longer stable. He's convinced his MQ is to blame, but given his *ahem* "great technical knowledge" I'm sceptical to say the least. If it is after all, he's getting this and I'll try and fix whatever is wrong with his. If not, I suppose I won't be needing SoftMPU any more...

CT2940. Not the best models, but I am very pleased with them.

Recieved my TF-530 in the mail today. I must say that this is quality soldering. That red PCB looks so sweet.
Still waiting for the new A500-Floppy drive and I need to get a new solder iron, as the old is nearly worn out.
And I need to modify a PC power supply in order to give this baby enough juice.

Interesting story with the mpus there dionb , do update us on it!

Just bought nice sdram's… 2x256 pc166 in blue heatsink. AFAIK the fastest sdram's.

Actually I'm slowing down, getting more selective. And in this case plain lucky - I wasn't looking actively for these, just scanning adverts locally when I spotted something.

Fast - and very blue (even if the PCB looks suspiciously green 😢 ). Since I learnt of their existence through you, I've been looking for some of those red OCZ SDR-SDRAM DIMMs (my son wants a red build), but - as expected - no luck so far. Am contemplating moving to DDR instead (I already have a red So478 board I could use in that case), but not quite giving up yet.

What use are these, then? For overclocking early Athlon or P4 boards with SD-RAM?

As always with this sort of "OC" stuff, it's at least 50% marketing - but other 50% is i815EP with some P3 at 150-166MHz FSB. Not going to work with every CPU or board, but when it does, it really goes.

I didn't know i815 could do 150/166MHz at all..

Not officially of course, but just as with the i430TX, it was a late part that could have been sold at higher speeds, but for commercial reasons (P4) was not. That made it a good overclocking part.

I remember reports of 166MHz being reached regularly (iirc mainly with P3-866EB parts). Can't find a link right now, but here's one of a P3-1000EB running at 153MHz FSB: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=770&page=5

I used to own a slot-a board from abit. It would run the ram at 33mhz above the cpu fsb. So those pc166 dimms would REALLY have come in handy.

Finally managed to pick up a proper CD player. It's a Onkyo Integra DX 6850 from the early 90's. The one I got is in very good shape except for the drive belts which should be changed sometime. The player was cheap enough that I won't worry about the laser unit (no longer available) dying on me.

If this thing lasts I'll think about replacing the plastic side panels with some wooden ones.
