I built this overkill windows xp pc from parts of some of my previous PCs. It isn't Retro yet, but perhaps in 10 years and meantime I have a pretty good pc to play crysis with.
Perhaps I will change the GPU to something else later if earlier windows XP games are going to have problems with it and I might switch the cd-rom drive to a dvd drive.

CPU: Core 2 Duo E8500
Motherboard: Asus Striker 2 Extreme
RAM: 8Gb DDR3
GPU: Geforce GTX 780TI FE
HDD: 300Gb maxtor SATA hard drive
Plextor cd-rom drive

I upgraded the gpu to 1080ti when it came out, so it was just left in my closet. It is one of the last gpu to have winxp drivers so I decided to try how well it would work in all winxp games. I did run 3dmark01 on the computer and I got 67000.

I actually forgot to put sound card in there. I was planning of checking out if I can make my mx300 work in this system because I had problems with it in the previous system that I built.

Yeah, me too- what's yours? Mine's a 9600 GT (512mb, GDDR3) and it isn't uncommon to see cards here that outclass mine- more so a few months ago when I used a Radeon HD 1650 Pro xD

The CPU is definitely not overkill for XP, but the GPU is somewhat overpowered for the CPU; also, 8GB RAM? Assuming you plan to use the standard 32-bit XP build, anything over 4GB is a waste.

Did you use 2x4GB for memory configuration ?

no, It is 4x2Gb corsair xms3 ddr3 kit.
I know windows xp can't use all the ram, but back then when I used this motherboard in my main pc, I didn't use windows xp so that is why it has 8Gb. I just thought that even if it can't use all of it. Keeping the whole 8Gb corsair kit there doesn't hurt anything either.

Same feelings here. My daily rig has a GTX 770 and received it only recently (3-4 months) 🤣 Previous one was a 560Ti, that I used since 2013.

Fine, I get the hint. I'll find another gpu to put in the system. -_-;

I guess I'll keep it until I find out if any of the games have problems with the gpu.
I have actually kept all the video cards I have ever had, so I have a lot of paper weights.
It is actually interesting being able to follow upgrade path I have had with video cards in pcs.
Trident 256Kb VGA card -> S3 Trio64 pci -> Diamond 3D monster 2 -> Ati Radeon DDR -> Ati Radeon 9700 pro -> Club3D Radeon x1900XTX -> BFG Geforce GTX 280 (Started having freezes) -> Asus Radeon HD 5870 -> Geforce GTX 780 TI FE-> Asus Geforce GTX 1080 TI

Titan Black should do better than GTX 780 Ti.
In Crysis, when max. AA levels (8xQ/16xQ), are combined with Downsampling from 4k - my GTX 780 Ti ran out of VRAM and game grinded to halt or simply crashed.

Minor update to this system. I added Sound Blaster x-fi card in the system for EAX support and switched plextor optical drive to black asus dvd drive to match the black case. The old plextor drive was white.
System has been very stable and useful running old starforce games that I cant run on new PCs because of the starforce. Been playing games like silent hunter 3.
Of course I am bit worried about the parts getting older and the psu must be 15 years old soon. RAM does not seem like it has degraded and still runs fine at 1600Mhz.
This is probably the system I have used the most if you dont count my main PC.
