When did you buy your computer? The 8m and the 420 was average in 1994, the p90 topnotch.

I got it end 95-1996ish. It shipped with windows 3.11.

I've found the same case on ebay. Kinda ridiculous to pay so much for just a case. It is also interesting to see that it came with many different configs.

Amazing case. This was the case of my 1998 PII and later 2000 PIII PCs. I am desperately in search for one to rebuild that setup.

Had this same case since around then (stamp too faded to read now but seem to remember it was 2001). Can't recall where I bought it but pretty sure it wasn't branded as Chieftec. The IAN / EAN barcode on mine

suggests its registration originated in the Netherlands.

Also, hope you've long since consigned that Q-TEC PSU (what a POS they were!!!) to the bin.

Ive bought this pc just because the mainboard 😀 i dont use the qtec psu, but i liked the case.

I have the Micronics labeled AT case top left on the photo, Asus P/I-P55TP4XE with 233 MMX, 64MB RAM, Creative DXR2, Voodoo2, Rage Pro Turbo 8 MB PCI and SB AWE32 sits there. There is alphanumeric display of CPU speed behind the tinted plexiglass but it shows only up to 166 MHz sadly.

Can anybody place a year on this case I recently obtained? It came with an MMX233 in it but it was likely upgraded, the turbo display is 2 digits. I used to see this very case from small computer businesses for years, but I really can't say much about it. I've been looking to find where these came from because I know for a fact they are extremely ubiquitous. Later versions of it came with 3 digit displays.

Edit: Vogons users place this case around 1992 coming with 386 class machines on the low end, and later models sporting Pentiums without a turbo button probably circa 1995-1996.

I'd put the PC at around 1997 - it was very common around that time for small computer shops to use these older 486 cases for Pentium builds as they might've had plenty of them in stock. So while the case is likely a ~92-93 model, it would've been sitting in storage for a few years until it was used. Most PCs i saw around 97-99 had more or less this style of case.

Once you build in a Lian-Li aluminun case you never go back to cheap cases.

i use cheap cases because of the age correctness 😀 after 2000 i used inwin, chieftec, antec cases at my retro pcs. at my modern pc i use a fractal design.

i know this case, but i cannot tell you the exact year - i know one build from 99 (late budget ss7), i think it is around 96-99 from the style. could you tell me more about the configuration?
i plan to check the hungarian chip magazine for the old computers to get more info about the cases.

It might as well be a clone, or just a cheap old case, but my first ever PC was in a case, with a front like this, so it has some santimental value to me. I am looking forward to rebuilding my first ever PC so I am actively looking to buy one like this.

• That was originally a budget 486 configuration from 1996, but I friend of mine had a DX2-66 config with similar case from 1994. The difference, it had a black inside and the manufacturing quality looked less cheap. So the case is from ca 1994-1996.
• I think those started appearing in 1996 or so, and were somewhat common in low-end builds until the end of the 90s.
