I just can't seem to get this game to run on XP. I tried installing it on windows and running it in windows. Screen goes black as if switchign into the game then goes directly back to desktop. I've tried using DOSbox. And it will just tell me to "Please insert cd 2 and press any key" and i do but it will keep repeating that message. Then i tried the DOSONLY install of it...and still, asks for the CD. Any help at all would be great. Thanks.

I can't remember the key (it's in the DOSBox readme), but there is a key (ctrl+fsomething) for refreshing/swapping disks. You need to use this hotkey to tell DOSBox to re-read the CD so that it will see that you have changed it.

It's in there, I promise - it's just a bit hard to find. Also, the description isn't CD specific -- it's more like "flush disk cache" or "swap floppy disks" or something like that. Look around the readme for the description of what the Ctrl+F1 through Ctrl+F12 keys do and you should be able to find it.

ok well i found out it's ctrl+F4....however it doesn't do anything..at all...basically it just keeps saying "Please Insert Disc 2. Press Any Key To Continue". and i do...and it will say it again, and again, and again, etc. any other suggestions?

As far as I know you should be able to install the games through DOS in Windows. If not open your CD folder and copy all the contents to seperate folders in your hard drive. And for games 5-7 add this to your RESOURCE.CFG file.

audio = RESOURCE.AUD
cd = no

My Kings Quest 5 CD does not have a RESROUCE.AUD File, it is called AUDIO.001

You think that 'loading an os on the side' is gonna be easier than DOSBox ??? Tried a CVS version of DOSBox ?

King's Quest Compilation? Is that some new collection being released by Vivendi? Are they going to bundle some DOS emulator or new AGI/SCI interpreter to make them run in XP and above without problems?

Yeah, I've heard about it but not much info expect that they are re-releasing the games.

Amazon Link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/- … ogames&n=507846

Lots of speculation but no real facts. I just love how people always assume that it'll have 100% compatibility with XP and be BETTER THAN EVAR! heh. It's NEW! IT MUST BE GOOD!

Ahh, the ignorance of youth. 😀

If it's anything like any previous re-releases:

1. It'll have no fixes....at all. (Yet the requirements will list it as "XP Compatible")
2. It'll be bundled in a new installshield installer. Oh yeppe! A DOS game with an installshield installer!
3. It'll have fixes alright.....fixes that break the game.
4 It'll have fixes.....the bare minumum fixes absolutely minimum to get it out the door.

It has been *confirmed* that a Russian company re-programed the games for XP.
It was also supposed to be Released October 11, 2005.
It is rumored that AGD Interactive's Kings Quest 1 VGA and 2 VGA will be in the Compilation.
And the Reason no Quest for Glory Compilation is announced yet is because simply, AGD is not done with QFGII Remake.

I do not know how much of that is true, except the Orginal Release date is true.

Other Compilations coming out:
Leisure Suit Larry
Space Quest
Police Quest.
--
They are most likely going to be CD Sleeves or DVD Cases.

More info:
http://www.vintage-sierra.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=966
Besides Amazon, the Compilations are on Walmart - http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4307191

Looks like these Compilations are actually ESRB rated now. (This is recent). Strange that Space Quest is rated "E" when its older releaes were "T".

I think my copy of KQ6 might be from the old KQ collection but I'm not sure. Anyway it seems to work.

Here's the KQ6CD.BAT that I don't use (because it makes absolutely no sense....): (I just use sierra.exe)

@echo off cd \SIERRA\KQ6CD D: cd \ :getDisk2 if exist disk2 goto run echo Please Insert Disk 2 pause goto getDisk2 :run […]
Show full quote

@echo off
cd \SIERRA\KQ6CD
D:
cd \
:getDisk2
if exist disk2 goto run
echo Please Insert Disk 2
pause
goto getDisk2
:run
C:
sierra

I think that Version 1 of Kings Quest 7 is whats on the Collection. This means it only runs on Windows. To run on DOS you need to copy a VESATEST.exe file from another (KQ7 was SCI2? Right?) SCI2 game. And then Make your own .BAT file which says:

@echo off call CheckCD F @if exist vesadrv.bat call vesadrv.bat K:\KQ7DOS\sierra -o K:\KQ7DOS\resource.cfg :end […]
Show full quote

@echo off
call CheckCD F
@if exist vesadrv.bat call vesadrv.bat
K:\KQ7DOS\sierra -o K:\KQ7DOS\resource.cfg
:end

Name it KQ7DOS.BAT
--
Make another Batch File:

F: cd vesa vesainst /Vvesa /BK:\KQ7DOS /TSIERRA.DIB cd\ K: […]
Show full quote

F:
cd vesa
vesainst /Vvesa /BK:\KQ7DOS /TSIERRA.DIB
cd\
K:

- Name it VESA.BAT
--
And your RESOURCE would look like this, Assuming F: is your CD ROM:

videoDrv = VESA.DRV soundDrv = MT32.DRV audioDrv = DACBLAST.DRV joyDrv = NO directory = \KQ7DOS cmd = KQ7DOS mouse […]
Show full quote

videoDrv = VESA.DRV
soundDrv = MT32.DRV
audioDrv = DACBLAST.DRV
joyDrv = NO
directory = \KQ7DOS
cmd = KQ7DOS
mouseDrv = NONE
memoryDrv = NONE
minMemory = 1600k
brightness= 0
language = 1
minCPU = 386
CD = yes

resMap=F:;K:\KQ7DOS
resAUD=F:
resSFX=F:
patchDir=K:\KQ7DOS;F:;F:\AVI
robot=F:\AVI

In all of that K:\ Should be renamed to the directory KQ7 is in and F:\ is the CD-ROM.

Only the second collection had KQ7. It is the version 2 of the game, which runs on XP AND includes a DOS version. You cannot convert the Windows version of KQ7 to DOS.

I have all versions of KQ6 and they all run in DOSBox just fine. Even the Windows version will run in Win3x running in DOSBox.
