The Free60 Project wiki and developers mailinglist has been launched. The project aims to port open source operating systems like GNU/Linux and Darwin to the Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming console. The site already contains some interesting details about the Xbox 360 security: per-box key stored on CPU, boot ROM will be on CPU too and a hypervisor verifies the running state of the kernel.

Might actually be worth it to get an XBOX 360 if they get it working. More than worth it actually. All of that hardware with the power of Linux. Too bad it's not x86....but hey DosBox will still work! In Normal core......

I don't really get the interest in running Linux on consoles, except maybe to use them to stream video onto a TV. For anything else it seems like running Linux on a desktop would be more cost efficient.

The only time I tried Linux on console was that infamous Linux kit on PS2. The entire experience can be summarized in one word: lame. However, it could be just me, I have odd relations with Linux on desktop either -- I always seem to use some hardware that is not (and not likely to be) supported and I am have quite a few pieces of software that don't have equivalents on Linux side. I know, I am probably doing something wrong, but Windows just works for me 😉

Best of luck to the Free60 project. It looks like the Xbox 360 will be near impossible to hack. All this DRM stuff sends cold shivers up my spine.

Bah, someone will figure it out. And then someone will do it better.

For something as popular as Xbox360, it won't take too long until somebody hacks it.

In the meanwhile, I am just going to use it unhacked which will also be cool enough 😀
