This site looks rather promising. Perhaps it will evolve into an archive which also covers the PC/Dos games more thoroughly than others. I think there is definite need for an archive focusing on the earlier OPL2 and MT-32 MIDI music.

Nice, but it doesn't have many games at the moment.

Check this site, it's a software that lets you convert music from all kind of many various games (old and new) to WAV files.

Looks like an interesting piece of software, but I'm rather interested in music from the early days of PC soundcards ('88-'92) before the advent of CD-Audio and General Midi, which are both well covered on the web.

While there are Adlib archives, none of them can be called exhaustive. There is also virtually no music generated by CMS/Gameblaster, PC Speaker or other more exotic hardware available. Also MT-32 pages are mostly specialized (like the excellent Quest Studios page) or simply small.

Compared to the amount of coverage of SID music or NES/SNES and other consoles PC music from the early days receives very little attention. Perhaps this will change in the near future. I'm under the impression that many retro gamers are acquiring original sound hardware which was too expensive back then (like the MT-32) and which was mainly bought by musicians.

I really miss a dedicated MT-32 archive. Mirsoft has a host of MIDI rips, but the MT-32 ones always lack their SysEx.

Well console music is pretty well standardized whereas PC game music uses lots of different formats.

I've recently starting going through my list with GAP and it looks like the .VOC format is pretty much the standard for old DOS games, starting mid-late 90's you start seeing more .WAV's, and then finally the Windows games are a mix of .MP3/.OGG/.WAV.....still have a looooooooooooong way to go before I get good statistics but it's coming along. I wish GAP was still being actively developed tho. 🙁

You are so right. And it wouldn't require much space if you hosted mainly MIDIs.

The Amiga has over 200 different formats, yet you can find dedicated archives for those (Exotica, Amiga Music Preservation, MOD Archive...) 😀

Have you tried Dragon Unpacker? It's a better ripper in my opinion. WinRipper still does a good job too.
