The Serpent Rider wrote:What the hell is going on here
Probably some horrible driver issues with the Gold Source.
I thought the same or maybe that is just some Intel optimatisation for those chips? I815 is also doing great here... besides I think that Half-Life is not the most reliable benchmark for video cards 😉
feipoa wrote:Nice work. This must have taken 6 months or more.
Actually, It is almost 9 months since I started this project 😉
In case you want to know HOW IT ALL STARTED, here is THE BORING STUFF(read for your own responsibility, watch out for mistakes):
In March 2018 I got an upgradeware Tualatin adapter for SLOT1 thanks to my friend Batyra. I wanted to check how my ABIT BE6-II (i440BX) is doing on my P3-S 1400 Mhz CPU. I was amazed how this config performed...! so far I was using ABIT ST6(i815) as my main RIG for testing, and I always believed it WAS THE BEST CHOICE (exactly like most “unaware” people think...) So I started to compare both, then I thought it would be nice toinclude in the test some more - I had ABIT VH6T (Via 694T) already at that time, so I compared 3 chipsets. Eventually I decided to get AS MUCH MOTHERBOARDS WITH DIFFERENT CHIPSETS as I could get. So I started looking...
My dream was to get i820 first. It was tempting to test the RAMBUS on Tutalatin – not many tests of such kind could be found on the interent and I was expecting to get really high scores on such config. I found ASUS P3C-E on archived Allegro.pl auction. It was sold in 2012.... even though I asked the seller if he can tell me who bought tha board back then in 2012? It turned out it was a member of 3dfx.forum.pl with whom I hadn’t kept in touch for a while – Yakusa! I found his facebook account and send him a message so we stared talking. I turned out he also had ASUS P3C-2000. He liked the idea of my project and since he hadn’t use those board for years he decided to send them BOTH for FREE to me 😉 When I got them I realized that they do not work... physically they seemd PERFECT but for some reaseon refused to boot ;( I was really sad... I thought I am going to abandon this project but then Callahan came to help me 😁 I send the boards to him, and waited for his examination and opinion.
When I though I am not going to continue with that project I “discovered” that “strange” mobo with DDR and SDR by ECS! I thought that maybe I can give this one a try, but I was very reluctunt to touch anything besides ASUS/ABIT... and ECS had very bad fame, and my experience with that company was alo fatal... Again I found one on archived Allegro.pl auction. This one was not even sold, but was no longer for sale. I asked that guy to put it on auction agian so that I can buy it, he said OK. Surprisingly I was too late for the auction! It only lasted 15 minutes and I didn’t buy it! I WAS SO ANGRY! I wrote on 3dfx.forum.pl about this situation. Luckilly it turned out that it was my friend Callahan who bought it! (he is constantly looking for unique harwdare) 😁 I could not believe it 😉 Of course he send the board to me and it was me who paid for that purchase. I tested the board and its performance blew my mind away... I was even more motivated to finally finish the test and make the project complete!
I continued looking for other boards and he next "exotic" one was found by me on some russian site. It was ASUS TUA266 (ALI) I asked a friend of mine who lives in Russia(Slaventus) to buy it for me – he sait he is going to do it and he even CAME TO POLAND with the intention to bring it directly to avoid shipping cost, but the russian seller was too late with the shipping to Slaventus so he visited me without the board, but once he got back to Russia he shipped it to me so I fianlly got it in May. I started testing it. And I was soooo disapointed... At fist I thought this mobo is broken... I could not run anything properly, errors all the time in 3D application (mostly OpenGL) some cards did not want to work at all... I gave up... I felt upset that the project will not be complete.
All of a sudden Callahan brought the good news – he fianlly repaired both mobos: ASUS P3C-E and P3C-2000 they started to WORK! I was so happy to hear that 😀 I tested them and was a little bit disspaointed with the performance on RDRAM, a knew that the SDR version will suck though
The project went on. I tested all other boards but still I could net make all the test on TUA266... All in all I had found a way how to “set” this mobo, and most of the tests were finished (I described the problems I encountered on this forum)
feipoa wrote:These were my first thoughts as well. Single CPU Tualatin boards don't do anything for me, same with single CPU slot 1 boards in general.
The thing is that I didn’t feel any strong desire to test DUAL CPU boards. This is how I view it:
- Workstation and server boards WERE NEVER made for gaming in mind! They serve for different purposes!
- Most of “regular gamers” back then did not even dream to OWN such hardware... it was too expensive, totally different league...
- I used Windows98SE, DUAL cpus won’t work properly here.
feipoa wrote:Unfortunately, I don't have the AGP cards you used for testing. I have the Ti 4400, not 4600. I have a Quadro FX3000, not FX 5950. Similar, but not quite there. I have a GT6600, GT6800 and a 7900GS though.
Don’t wory 😉 If you realny want to help, you can use any of those cards who are in my possesion right now. (the list was updated in may so it is not complete) I will redo some tests with the card/cards you picked 😀

Garrett W wrote:Amazing work in this thread OP! But, if I may suggest, I have some readability concerns that would vanish if you put thumbnails linking to the image in your posts instead of the full image or if you put an imgur link to the images. As it is, it is a little hard to follow!
Don't mean to shit on your parade though, this is a lot of work and it is very interesting. For one, for me it completely clears the mystery between 440BX, i815 and Apollo Pro 133A, 5 frames per second on average don't really make much of a difference for me 😀.
Thank you 😀 I am glad you enjoyed it.
When it comes to the pictures and their size – they are exactly the way that I want them to be 😀 Perfect for my screen’s resolution. When I take a look at a particular chart I see only one chart 😁 That was the plan, but I am aware some people use lower resolutions.... then you shuold buy a new screen 😜
TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING TO SUPPORT THIS PROJECT!
Plans for this year:
- finish Testing on Windows XP with Tualeron (100FSB) @1400 MHz with DIFFERNT video cards
- Test other chipsets on SL6BY that do not have AGP slot (using a PCI video card)
Plans for 2020:
- Test i840 and ServerSet... if I find any for cheap money 😉
- test ALL possible motherbards by ASUS and ABIT with all possible chipsets.
Plans for the rest of my life...
- TEST EACH SINGLE SLOT1/SOCKET 370 MOTHERBOARD by all possible manufacturer that were ever made 😜
I know that it sounds crazy, but I hope I will find support here, and more people will join to present their results 😉
There are mainly 4 requirments:
1 use SL6BY with 512 MB RAM.
2 use one of the grapaphics cards I used with the same drivers that I used.
3 use win98SE with SP2.
4 use the same AGP/Chipset drivers that I used.
I think a lot of peole have this CPU and the cards used for testing are pretty common (who doesn’t have a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP? ) For other tests I also use:
- ATI Radeon 9700 PRO AGP by Hercules
- GeForce 6 6800 XT by Galaxy (3,3/1,5V) - so it works on i440BX 😉
- GeForce 5 5500 PCI (128BIT)
Who wants to join in then? 😜
