Even better why this year and why now? Was there a 10 year challenge last year?

Ohhhhh trust me, it is for me 😀
For all the PC's I had, I can't tell exactly what was in it.

But I like this challenge more than sudoku.

It's somewhat satirizing/adapting the "10 year challenge" which is trending on social media right now (posting one of your first profile photos, then posting your current one: "how hard did aging hit you" sorta thing

Fascinating... I'm using my Tualatin system since a year (I started in July 2017) and so far, I had absolutely no issues in terms of usability. Instead, I found pretty fun to search for workarounds and ways to push the performance to the maximum and see what's capable of doing considering the age of the machine. About SSE2, I haven't had any issue, but maybe that's because the programs I use just don't require it (as well as games, since I only play games from the 1990s to the early 2000s). However, I think I might have reached the maximum limit with the hardware I have, since I have overclocked the CPU to 1.5GHz with the FSB running at 148Mhz (the maximum stable frequency I got), as well as overclocking my current graphics card, an ATI Radeon X1950 Pro, gaining some extra performance thanks to it, compared to the Geforce 6800GT I had before. I tried to switch to a Radeon HD4670, but unfortunately either my motherboard is incompatible with it, or my PSU -a Corsair CX500M- is not powerful enough, or my card is defective, because XP just freezes at the boot screen when I put that card into the computer, so I'm just going to stick with the overclocked X1950 Pro for the time being.

However in future, I want to get a bigger PSU with more amps on the 5V and 12V rails, another SSD to replace the data HDD I have at the moment, and maybe look for Kingston 512MB PC133 CL2 modules, as I heard they are very overclocking friendly. I'm definitely going to stick with this old machine for a long time, it just works.

1979 - nothing for myself but my Dad had a 16-bit IBM OPD-Mini in an OS/6 for his home office
1989 - 386DX-20
1999 - K6-2-400 (I think I had an Athlon the next year)
2009 - Phenom II 945
2019 - i5-4570 (might finally upgrade this year been running an 860k forever and just got the i5, like Tuesday)

Did somebody already start the video card challenge? 😀

(We probably ought to rename it the album instead of the challenge, maybe I'd post pics.)

I like the idea of extending this further back. 😀 Here's mine:
1979 - I was 10 and my parents didn't own a computer (they never would). I did however, have an Intellivision. 😎 Favorite games were Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Shark! Shark!
1989 - by this time I had an Apple ][e for 8 years. I got it in 7th grade and took it with me to college for gaming and word processing. It would be my only computer from 1981-1992. Talk about bang for your buck! (got a Packard Bell 386sx20 in '92)
1999 - this year I upgraded my P200MMX to a Celeron 300a @ 450Mhz.
2009 - I had a C2D E4300 @ 2.4Ghz that I bought in 2007.
2019 - current rig that I bought in 2018...a refurb HP EliteDesk i5-4590 with 8GB and 250GB SSD. I added in a GTX 750Ti which was a hand-me-down from my son's gaming PC.

Around 2015, I built my son an i5 Haswell/GTX 750Ti system. At this time, I only had a basic laptop for email and internet, and lived my gaming life through my son's PC. Sometime in late 2015 I got my first DOS retro PC, then cobbled together a high-end WinXP system for my own gaming, as our budget didn't allow more than one "nice" PC. Finally, in 2018 with tax return money I bought the HP EliteDesk for $350, upgraded my son's PC to a GTX 1060, and used his 750Ti which is serving me quite well. Plays most modern games fine on low-medium settings, and many games just a few years old maxed out.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

The one who still has all those systems. 😀

I need to see a video of Skyrim actually running on a dual Tualatin system..

you will be forced to run an old version, I think after a certain patch (1.4?) they started using SSE2 which increased performance greatly for newer CPUs but broke compatibility with Athlon XP and older...

in any case, I've tested a little Skyrim on a p4 3ghz (cedar mill) with the 4670 and it was not horrible, like 15-20FPS if I remember correctly, so maybe dual tualatin can also play, not very well, but...

Yes, it was an older version. I don't remember the exact number, but it WAS after the SSE2 and that's why I had to patch it myself to make it work.
It wasn't well optimized or didn't make very good use of the SSE2 though and that's why I got away with just replacing the code with NOPs (90s). I am not good enough to rewrite the code to work around the limitation, but on this particular game it wasn't necessary. I tried this trick on some other games and it doesn't work. I wonder if a proper patch is even possible and what instructions you would need to replace to "emulate" the SSE2 without actually using it.

If there is enough interest, I could make a video of it working. It's been a while though and that comp has been in storage for a while. It should still work though.

2009: i7-920 @ 4 GHz
2019: i7-920 @ 4 GHz

* nah, twisting the truth here. The 920 is my second rig, the primary is a Ryzen 1600. But damn that i7 is getting a funeral if it ever caves in...

Another i7-920/X58 in 2009. I really enjoyed that machine.

2019: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X. Honestly I hope this system lasts as long as the i7-920 did.

I've had only intel cpu's since my first PC in 1998 (Pentium MMX 166MHz) until last Christmas, when I found a nice deal in the used market for a Ryzen 5 1600. The Q6600 served me well, though from 2008 till 2015.

My AMD Phenom II 965 turns either 9 or 10 this year. I can't remember if it was bought in 2009 or 2010. It's still running to this day, although starting to show its age. Its successor is a Ryzen 7 1700 acquired shortly after release. The Phenom just sees web browsing and chatting these days, while the Ryzen does the heavy work. Sadly, I didn't have my own computer in 1999 😵

Oddly, I've, completely by accident, been an AMD loyalist for most of my life. The oldest machine I can remember was some dopey eMachines tower bought for me, with an Athlon 64 dual core. I distinctly remember being excited about all the cool 64-bit stuff I could do in Far Cry, but I don't remember whether or not I was disappointed.

My main rig in 2009 was a Core 2 duo running Windows XP 32 bit.
My main rig in 2019 is a Core 2 duo running Windows XP 32 bit.

No pictures because I have no desire to re-apply thermal compound 🤣
I also can't remember what model Core 2 duo it is, and it is halfway between being transferred to another case a the moment so I can't boot it up and see right now.
I do have a i7 machine, but the only thing I use it for is if I ever decide to play a modern game. Otherwise, it's the core 2 duo.

Other specs for those interested:
3 Gb RAM (don't ask my why it's 3 GB, I can't figure it out either)
74 GB WD Raptor 10000 RPM drive
3.5 inch Floppy (for archiving purposes)
Some kind of generic asus VGA adapter
and that's about it. It's pretty boring TBH.

2009: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
2019: Intel Core i7 6700K

In between, I did use an FX 4100, got a little burned by the performance. But we have Ryzen systems that perform excellently in this house now, and I'm using the 6700K as a "hand me down". My husband is the modern hardware enthusiast between us 😀

Suppose some other members had included the 20 year CPU, mine was a K6-2 at 450. I still have the CPU, but the rest of the system is long gone.
