I was rather surprised and disappointed to find out that S-YXG50 and VSC-88 software synths did not work in a Win9x DOS prompt..

Apparently I can get S-YXG50 to work by using the VSTi version and the VST MIDI driver which I will try tonight; but I was wondering if I actually have any other options for this..

There is also the Casio SW-10 Soft Synth but I don't know if that can be used from a DOS Prompt either..

As far as I know ESSTech has a Software Synth that does work with DOS prompts but requires an ESS chipset like the ES1938 and Aureal's own DLS capable Software Synth works in DOS prompts but requires a Vortex card. Are there any that are chipset agnostic?

Well, the VST MIDI Driver does not work in Win98SE, complaining of needing a newer version of Windows so I am back to square one. There is no solution for this in Windows 98?
