VOGONS

I've reviewed a few GM daughterboards and modules in the past, and I'm now considering reviewing or at least recording some sound cards for their FM synthesis implementations.

I decided to start with ForteMedia FM801 since there seems to be very little actual recordings of this card online even though it's one of the most compatible PCI sound cards I've come across.

I can't seem to decide on a list of games though. Here is what I have in mind right now:

Descent
Doom
Dune
Gabriel Knight
Lemmings
Loom
Monkey Island 2
System Shock

What else would VOGONS suggest?

Origin were masters of FM music quality in the early 90s. I'd recommend WC1-2, UU1-2, and U7Pt1-2. Also, Prince of Persia 2, Transport Tycoon and Under a Killing Moon.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Tyrian has great FM sound. You can use the setup program's built in Jukebox to do tests.

Also Adlib Tracker II and Reality Tracker come with demo tunes you can use to test.

Oh Tyrian, that's a good one indeed. I'll also add Transport Tycoon. Pinball Dreams maybe?

Tyrian and Dune are mandatory, some of the best OPL music ever made in games.

Pinball Dreams would be interesting, because iircthey use a MOD player that outputs samples over the AdLib using a special trick.
You could also throw in Pinball Fantasies perhaps?
Another game that does this is Supaplex.

Dreams or Fantasies, take a pick 😀

Also Prince of Persia 1 vs 2?

Why not both? IIRC the MODs in Pinball Fantasies were a bit more polished, but my memory might betray me. Haven't played Dreams in a long time. Fantasies was always my favorite.

It indeed used the discrete volume levels of the Adlib channels to make some crude pulse code modulation, IIRC. It's a wonder that it didn't fry the OPL2.

People do say that the Cryo games (Dune & KGB) have good FM music. So maybe add those to your list?

Heretic and ROTT (v1.2!!!!!) have been my OPL testing mainstays. Cybersphere's also good to keep around. It's tiny, really uses panned OPL3 for everything and has a test mode.

Darklands has a jukebox that lets you play its 20+ songs from the game folder. It can be found here: http://www.darklands.net/files/files.shtml

I haven't listened to the FM versions of their songs much, so I can't speak for their quality, but the MT-32 versions sound impressive.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.
