So, in trying to build a great Windows 98 machine, I've come into a few issues. Namely with ATI videocard compatibility in Windows 98.
If DOS is not part of the formula, and neither is A3D, is there any game or games that absolutely require Windows 98 to run?

I'll be using a P4 3GHz+HT Prescott ASUS P4P800 rig with an ATI x1600 AGP and hopefully Windows XP SP3.
The original Quadro 980XGL nor the ATI 9800Pro just didn't cut it in XP games like Half-Life 2 or Far Cry, but i also want to preserve the ability to play older Windows 98 games without too many hassles.

Thanks

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 - Menus sometimes crash on XP and above, also in-game if Windows key / alt+tab etc.
Grand Prix Manager 2 - Designed for Windows 95, audio and other glitches outside of 95/98/NT4.

Screw period correct; I wanted a faster system back then. I choose no dropped frames, super fast loading, fully compatible and quiet operation.

I was unable to run FireFight (1996) by Chaos Works on WinXP.

There exists an unofficial patch for v1.0 but not the final version 1.02.
In fact, this game is the main reason for me to boot WinME now and then.

Two big ones I remember.

Jane's USAF -- you can get it to load, but the pull down menus are broken in XP (really, 2000) and higher. Supposedly there is a fix, but I've never been able to make it work.

Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed -- It will not run in XP (or 2000) unless you delete GIMME.DLL. I think the entire series from 1 to PU is problematic in XP. NFS4, in particular, I think was one I had a lot of trouble with at the time.

Thanks guys.

Alright, well I also have a 7600GS that I can use except the rear-mounted heatsink on the graphics card hits the RAM slot tabs. I wonder if I can dremel a cutout on the heatsink just enough to clear those slots.

As you can see from the pics below, the AGP slot is right in line with the RAM slot tabs. 😢

I would use AGP + PCI-e board (or Dual PCIe), and two GPUs. AGP + PCI is also possible, but you will be GPU limited under any OS where PCI card is used for compatibility.

In general : "One GPU to rule them all" - doesn't work for XP + 98SE combo.

My "Electronic Arts Classics" Need for Speed Porsche 2000 (UK version) works perfectly on XP. In fact, I deliberately install it on XP so that I can use an xbox 360 controller for analogue steering and gas/brakes.

There was always the option of using MSs virtual PC if you wanted. It didn't cost anything and works well on XP Pro.

There's a glitch in the matrix.

In my experience, THPS2 works fine on Windows XP and 7 with no problems whatsoever (the menus never crashed for me). There's a Windows 2000 patch for the game, that should be able to fix it (I believe I already have this patch since it's integrated into the No-CD crack that I use). The only time it ever crashed for me was when I played the THPS3 levels in the LevelPack mod, though that's unrelated.

Further developments are happening all the time; someone finally patched SimCity 2000 Network Edition, for example.

But you may consult these older threads:

Games: when do you stop using Windows 98, and start using Windows XP?

Nothing to do with the OS itself, but moving from the 9800 to the x1600 may lose support for Palleted Textures and Table Fog. I can't remember when ATI stopped supporting them, but either of these will be necessary for some early 9x games with hardware accelerated video. Anything that old I run on my DOS/9x box with a VooDoo3. I tend to use Quake 3 engine games as the breakover point to a dedicated XP system with 2004+ hardware and my x1650. I'm not a purist though. At the time Half Life 2 came out I was still running a 1.1GHZ Tualeron and a 9500Pro. It's just that there's no need to suffer through that these days.

Nope. No Radeons supported those features. You need a FX series for that.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe. It was this issue that actually lead to the creation of TTDPatch and that then lead to Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Quite a legacy from some nerds frustrated that the game wouldn't start in XP. 😀
