Lately, I've been interested in just playing everything on my modern machine in the best way possible. For the most part, I use high-quality APTx-LL Bluetooth headphones with its accompanying adapter and it works fine. But I'm curious about the number of USB options I have for when I need to have it wired.
It seems nearly every USB X-Fi supports EAX, CMSS, and to some extent midi. However, in all my google searching, I can't find for the life of me which are actually hardware implementations. I can't even find their chipsets. For example, the SB1095, SB1290, SB-XFI-GPR2, and 70SB124000001.
On the other hand, I'm very interested in the Buran X3M, especially since the release of the unofficial roland soundbank: Unofficial Soundbanks for Dreamblaster X2 / X3M / X16.
My questions are:
1. Is a dedicated EAX device worth it w/ Windows 10, or can nearly every game be worked around with dsoal, indirectsound, or alchemy restriction remover?
2. Is the sound quality difference big enough between hardware and software midi for an X3M or even an SC55 to be worth it? Normally, I've just used EmperorGrieferus's update to Patch93's SC-55 Soundfont + CoolSoftMidiSynth. I remember midi sounding incredible on my Aureal Vortex 2 from my first retro build a few years back, but I'm not sure if its placebo effect from it being louder or something.
