Hi

I've this card that I found used and externally perfect without any damages. I tried to install it on a P5 775 mainboard and when I try to start the computer it can't boot, the cpu fan start for an instant and then stop like immediately staying off (psu too). Taking the video card out of the computer make the pc boot. I obviously think the card may be broken but how can I understand which is the problem if there are any solutions? It's probably the fastest most modern video card I have.
Thanks.

What board ?
Latest BIOS ?
Have you tried cleaning contact pins on PCI-e clot (on card itself) ?

The board is a asus 'p5e-vm do' the bios is the 0902 the latest. It never happened to me a video card stopping the mobo even starting.
I tried cleaning the whole card and contacts and nothing happens. When I press the power button the cpu move a little and stop. No psu activity.
There're not many components on the pcb of the video card. Could it be some of them shorted/broken?

I suspect that it's a MOSFET shortening problem. The two ones above (MDD1502) seems to be short if I put the multimeter one on the center and the other on the right / left pins. The two below (MDD1501) seems to have the center to right pin shorted but not the center to left pin, like it's designed maybe to be that way.

What power supply are you using?

Do you have a different PCIe video card you can try?

Mosfets changed from faulty mobos, it boot! No video out but pc seems to boot. Maybe the output is on the mini hdmi out. I update soon if works!

UPDATE: I tried every outputs and even if the fan runs and the pc boot, no video signal comes out of the card, while the mosfet changed solved the boot problem seems something else is wrong. I should try it on another mobo I don't have now. 😵

The psu I'm using is a Enermax EG375AX old style but good quality and really heavy. I don't think the 65W (?) requirement of the card is the problem here.

UPDATE: I really suspect the pciexpress of the mainboard is the problem here. I tried two other video cards (I am not sure they were working) and they don't show anything at the vga out. The pins of the connector seems fine, could it be some capacitor that is gone on the mainboard? I see only one actually bigger on the top but not much and it's close to the atx connector.

Maybe you need to disable the integrated igpu in the bios, or maybe set it to be secondary gpu. Try this, with a graphics card installed, if you plug the vga cable directly to the motherboard, does it output signal?

UPDATE: the mainboard connector works so the problem is still the GT640. I'm right now using a 8600GT 256MB I found as test card and it works correctly. No problems. So there's still something that's wrong with that card. 😒
Maybe the gpu itself is broken, who know. Does this card have an upgradable firmware on it?

By upgradable firmware you mean Bios ?
You can find another bios on techpowerup but I don't think I will fix it.

Yes the bios as last try to fix it but I think too the card is gone. Considering the price of the card I don't think I'll work a lot more on trying to fix it. 😒
