I have a question: I'm planning to get an audio mixer since I need one for merging my laptop's audio out (MIDI player) with my Sound Blaster 16 to a single set of speakers. If I just use a splitter, I get way too much noise on the line.

But, while figuring all this out, it dawned on me: the SB16 has both a Line Out and a Speaker Out and since MIDI has its own settings, I wonder if it's possible to mute regular MIDI (Adlib or OPL3) through speaker out and send it through Line Out instead? The reason for this is obvious: so I can regulate volume of the MIDI separately. In some games, the MIDI washes out the sound (Beneath A Steel Sky being a good example) and this would enable me to change volume on the fly.

No, that's not possible. Speaker Out is amplified, Line Out is not - that's it. From the view of the sound card, these are not separate outputs.

Sounds like the only solution then, is a second sound card. Sadly enough Resound OPL3 is out of stock 😒 .

I've never installed the software that came with Sound Blaster cards, but isn't there a command-line utility for changing volume included? If so, you could just create a batch file for problematic games that sets the volume for FM to a level you are satisfied with.

Yeah you can do that before you enter a game but I like the control in-game because I tend to change sound and music levels depending on the situation. Sometimes I like to play different music in the background. With DOOM for example, I'd play heavy metal or hard rock of my own. DOOM has easy volume sliders but most other games don't. And I'm a control freak so a mixer is a fun thing for me 🤣

You could just get an OPL2LPT or OPL3LPT for the parallel port. This would give you the possibility to have Adlib music on a separate audio out.

Good idea and I considered that but an OPL3 Aztech is €23 on eBay and an OPL3LPT is €60 - both with shipping included - and the Aztech is internal. I already have DB15MIDI installed on my gameport and it always makes me nervous when handling it because it's so exposed - I don't really like dongles at the back. If something accidentally bumped into the back, it's very easy to damage the ports or devices.

How about a DB25 extension cable?

Technically, you could mod the SB. The OPL has its own DAC, so there's an analog output that CAN be tapped. You would have to mute the FM mixer channel on the card (or sever the DAC output to the onboard mixer), and use an external mixer instead. Not saying it would be easy, or even a good idea, but it's doable if you're so inclined.

I'll try the twin soundcard thing first. If there's no conflict problems it will be the easiest solution that doesn't involve messing with the actual hardware.

You can always install two sound cards, use one for OPL3 and the other for MIDI. This is a pretty common build type for me (AWE64+ES688/OPL3).

Yeah that's what I had in mind with the Aztech. I just need to get a mixer now.
