You have the option to try out AWE option in games that support this, vs General Midi (but most will say its inferior)
Neither will have hanging not bug with the Roland

I just spent half an hour literally dumpster diving... found 2 legs for an external SCSI CD-Rom enclosure and an SCSI terminator... it might have been me who accidentally put them there in the first place 🤣

I managed to salvage a SCSI and Parallel Zip reader from my work, and a basic ass MS mouse.

Was on the way to the shops and came across a junk pile, with seven PCs! Sadly - all empty. I did find some goodies in the pile though. It was admittedly a bit tough carrying a box of sound cards and a bag full of miscellaneous bits around through the supermarket, but that's life when you walk to the shops and don't want to leave things there and hope they'll be there on the way back. Excuse the bad quality late night photos.

First case that excited me. Only has the PSU & FDD inside. Maybe the ODD too? No Motherboard though.

Another Celeron beige box with no motherboard.

A bag of 5.25" to 3.5" bay adapters and 5.25" covers.

A box of sound cards! Score!

Anyway, shopping happened and I squeezed it all into my backpack alongside the bay covers and adapters. Let's take a closer look at what I brought back.

Nothing special. Five 5.25" to 3.5" adapters which can be quite handy. A few 5.25" covers, a bunch of PCI brackets and two FDDs which were filled with dirt and leaves, so I'll likely junk them again. They're too new to be worth cleaning up, imo.

The PCI cards are boring, but free AWE64 and XWave w/ YMF724 cards? I can't argue with that!!

Overall, the box had the following for those interested:

• 1 x CT4830 - Sound Blaster Live! Value
• 1 x CT4780 - Sound Blaster Live! Value
• 1 x CT4520 - Sound Blaster AWE64 Value
• 1 x Labway XWave 5000
• 9 x CT4810 - Sound Blaster PCI

• 1 x Unknown ESS chipset card.

Pretty cool!

Finally, the HP case. I liked it, so I brought it back. I haven't opened it yet since it's late, but if it will fit a regular mATX board I'll be keeping it around.

I have the feeling based on what was in the pile, it was from a scrapper. Could be wrong but I can't imagine much else.

It will take an mATX motherboard but it has one of those stupid power supply mounted where a fan would be.

That one is the best card out of your box. Assuming it works. Its a awe64 value. If you find a ram module it will be able to do sound fonts.

Keep that 64 value. Their prices are going to skyrocket once the re-release of the 64 gold gets done.

Went back tonight. Walked again because exercise is fun. Some bloke took the opportunity to line up all the cases - presumably after looking through them all and being disappointed.

I picked out one more to bring home. I have an AOpen Slot 1 board, a lot of Slot 1 CPUs, a lot of memory, an 80mm radiator from the successful yet failed retro AIO experiment (yeah, I'm going there again), a newly found AWE64, a brand new PSU and no case to build in.

Tah-dah!

I also took the liberty of taking the case stickers off the other ones. There's a Designed for 98/2000 sticker as well but it isn't adhesive at all.

Inside is an AOpen (lucky, right?) 40x optical drive, a Panasonic FDD and a lot of 40 pin & 34 pin ribbon cables. There was a power supply which went right into the trash. Exterior needs some cleaning, interior needs some dusting but there's no rust. Thinking of going back for more, but I'd rather not keep too many empty cases on hand. That's just more to move around and store.

What a lucky year it's been for cool retro finds for me.

Me guess is he has Slot 1 Pentium II, Celeron, and Pentium III as some boards do support PIII easily, either Slot 1 or Slotket 370 (Slot 1 to Socket 370).

I took every Slot 1 sticker off the cases there I could find and stuck it on there for ease of transport. I didn't know what CPU I'd end up putting in there so I'll just use the right one when the time comes. 🤣

Anyway, I played around and cleaned up the case today (a post for another thread) - but I will head back one last time tonight before it is collected to grab some parts from the other one of this case that was in worse condition. Looking inside, it was three standoffs + three plastic clips. I'd rather six standoffs, and the standoffs were an unusual size so I'll have to grab those.

I might also check out the other optical drives in those cases to see if there's any 24x or older drives since I'm short on those.
