HI all,

Trying to share a folder on a 98SE machine to my OSX machine (10.14), seems that OSX now no longer supports the old ass version of SMB on 98, anyone have any fixes/workarounds or other solutions to this ?

Hi, have a look at this link
https://www.jamf.com/jamf-nation/discussions/ … support-in-os-x

It seems the issue is much older, though.
From what I remember, Samba got replaced by SMBX in macOS 10.7 (Lion) already.

For highest overall Win/Mac compatibility, OS X 10.3.7 (yes, Panther; pre-10.3.9) was the best, perhaps.
It supported SMB, as well as native AppleTalk protocols (not tunneled via TCP/IP).

Anyway, good luck! 😀

So what are my options sharing from a Windows 98 PC to a modern Mac then ?

Or put NAS between them.

Yep, or even something cheap like a Raspberry Pi running Samba with Lanman networking turned on...

Does it still work in modern macOS ? 😕 Dunno, I heard it's deprecated now, just like Gopher. Even Firefox removed support for it.

Used a tiny FTP server app from the App Store called QuickFTP and FileZilla on the WIn98 machine.

This combination seems to work very well and is super simple to get running.

Why wouldn't it? Both FileZilla and Cyberduck are still handling FTP pefectly. The CLI ftp command was removed from macOS a couple of versions ago, but installing it back with Homebrew is a matter of seconds.

Or Total Commander, even latest version is still working on Win 9x (I really don't know, what kind of sorcery is that, but I tested it myself).
