In DOS Box you can make a sequence of screenshots by pressing repeatedly CTRL-F5. I try to do the same in Windows (98, xp etc).
But the way to save a screenshot for windows games is more complex:
1) press print key
2) change to the Windows desktop
3) open third party Software
4) insert screenshot
5) save picture
I was looking for software which does all 5 steps with one shortcut (i.e. CTRL-ALT-F5) and found the so called Screenshot Utility (http://www.screenshot-utility.com/). But this nice little tool costs 24 bucks.

Does anybody know a screenshot tool, which does the same for free?

P.S: There are many tools like this. But most of them don't save directly into a file. So you have at least to confirm a message before saving.

If you are using Windows 10, you can just use the Windows Button + PrintScreen to save directly to a file.
Any screenshot you take is automatically saved in C:\User\USERNAME\Pictures\Screenshots

I don't think the shortcut works on Windows 7 though, sadly.
If you are using Windows 10, you can also use the Windows + Shift + S shortcut, which launches instantly the new Snipping Tool directly (no dialogs, which is very nice).

The feature is integrated in AMD driver since 16.12. You need to install Relive feature while install driver. http://www.amd.com
Or you can use msi afterburner, which works for most nvidia, amd, ati graphic cards. https://www.msi.com/page/afterburner
Or you can use fraps, it's shareware but free version can capture screenshots just fine. http://fraps.com/

All the above works for Windows 7. Fraps works for XP. Screenshot hotkey is configurable.

Thank you. I didn't know that, in spite of taking *lots of* screenshots every day due to my job 😊

OK. You don't seem to be a *typical* newbie. Thanks a lot for the good advise! Fraps works very very well for me 😀

I found a really good screenshot utility that has WAY too many settings. It is also open-source.
ShareX can capture any fullscreen application (I haven't tested extensively), but it has a ton of customisations.
By default it shows a notification, but you can disable that too. There is only a single temporary dialog when first using the program, other than that it is seamless.
