I was able to buy Star Tech's heavy duty port saver cable, VGAEXTAA6IN, as of about 3 years ago. With this cable, I see practically no loss in signal quality. Unfortunately, they are no longer available. Anyone know of a suitable low loss replacement?
This is the one I'm referring to.
https://www.startech.com/ca/support/VGAEXTAA6IN
https://www.startech.com/media/products/VGAEX … N_Datasheet.pdf

I also have a cable that is lower gauge, and looks something like the overpriced cables on eBay, e.g. https://www.ebay.com/itm/153621397014 and https://www.ebay.com/itm/233239531262 , but you can really start to see significant signal decline, especially when running higher resolutions, or when your standard display adapter isn't the sharpest display like a Matrox. These small gauge cables seem to amplify imperfections in less prestine display adapters.

So I'm looking for something beefy like what Star Tech used to sell. I have two of them setup in systems now and the display, even at 1280x1024 is prestine on a Matrox. Obviously, the disadvantage of port saver cables when used as a 3dfx pass though cable is that one of the cable ends needs to be screwed in from inside the case.

That pass through cable is the same thing as a KVM cable. Just the VGA part o a kvm cable also know as a VGA extention cable. it's nothing special.

all of those cables while they are half the size of this one are pretty terrible compared to this one,

4 Level of Shielding and Filtering:

1. Shielded each Red, Green and Blue color wires with UL2919, 75 ohm Mini Coaxial

+ 2 Twisted Pairs (26 AWG.) + 4 Conductors (26 AWG.) + 24 AWG. Drain Wire

2. Shielded with AL-Foil around above wires

3. Shielded with Braid around above bundle

4. Shielded with Ferrite Core Filters on each end of above cable

Not my listing but its just like this. you will be hard pressed to find them shorter than 1 foot or 0.3048 meter

This is a link to the Amazon item I bought two of to use as my Voodoo1/2 VGA pass-through cables. They're the same thickness to the cables you currently have and they're the same length. They work great - so glad I found them. Try one for yourself.

It also has blue plug ends. Very nice. I like color-coded cables where possible. I even took colored markers to generic I/O shields.

I can vouch for the quality of the C2G VGA cables. They are nicely made with true 75ohm mini coax on the RGB lines. Yes the ebay option claims the same level of build quality and is cheaper, but C2G offers a wide range of lengths and also M-M cables as well. Something to keep in mind for other VGA use cases at least. They are owned by Legrand too, so there's a major brand backing up the quality claims.

(Ferrite beads really do almost nothing to protect the integrity of an analog RGB signal)

its quad shielded. and they do more than nothing, and the one i listed is also 75 ohm. its just better. and customers reported that the same cable can go 100feet. if it was a 100ft cut.

I've got a similar one to the one that warlord linked in beige with blue plugs for 5€, it's available in beige with blue plugs, black with blue plugs and just plain black, in europe it's sold as "Inline SVGA extension".

it works perfectly fine on my Voodoo 2 SLI setup.
if anything the ferrite beads make it a bit harder to make the cable loop around as it has them on both ends even on the 30cm length but it fits perfectly otherwise.

I actually recently got an STB Voodoo2 and had to get a passthrough cable.
Ended up buying this:
https://www.amazon.com/C2G-52021-Extension-Ca … d/dp/B000Q6096S

It's a thicc boi, heavily shielded, and I saw no notable signal loss passing through a video signal from a Matrox G400. As a bonus, it's also angled on one plug.

Thanks a lot for all the links! So nothing that is 6" like my current cable?

I kind of like the one with the 90 degree angle, but would need to ensure there wasn't something in the way. I usually put the SCSI or IDE controller between the Voodoo and the display graphics card.

The angled plug actually goes UP from the source video card, then the straight side plugs into the Voodoo2. If you're using an AGP card as your "main" video card, there shouldn't be anything above it...usually.

I mean, did anyone use AMR? That's the only thing I've ever seen above an AGP slot...

Its for a Socket 4 Batman's Revenge board. There is no AGP slot, and only 3 PCI slots, which are on the bottom, with ISA on the top (this is opposite of most boards).

I ended up ordering two of these because they were available on amazon.ca with free shipping. About $14 USD each, shipped.

The cable with the 90 degree bend may work well if you have your primary display sufficiently far from the Voodoo, but in my case, there is only one slot space between.

The cable warlord recommended had an overpriced Canadian shipping cost, so this left me with the one I bought. I do like the lower profile end caps on it, but of limited importance.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. If anyone finds these in 6", please post back!

The amazon link advertises a VGA Video Extension Cable.
The pictures at the top of the listing show both cable ends with screws to plug into a device.
The listing itself together with the pictures in the listing show the male connector with jackscrews while the female connector has threaded hexagonal sockets to screw another VGA cable into. That's why they're labelled extension cables. You'll have to remove the sockets to plug the cable into your Voodoo card. From the picture I can't tell wether the sockets are screwed onto screws on the female connector so you can simply remove the socket and keep using the screw or if the socket is permanently attatched (making the cable look like the top pictures). Apart from that I really love the design of the connectors. Only downside is the missing kink protection on both ends. (Shouldn't be a problem on Voodoo builds as the cables are only bent in the middle.
I would really appreciate some pictures and a short review once you got the cable! 😁

Man, those are some really nice high quality cables from the looks of it! 😀 I wish I could find a 30cm pass through cable that nice on German ebay.
The internal construction using coax on RGB signal cables plus twisted pair (probably on both sync) with shielding plus shielding for the whole assembly is basically all you can ask for in terms of signal quality. On regular coax cables a ferrtie filter can help with signal integrity a lot. Due to the good construction (good shielding, individual coax cables and twisted pair) of the cable the ferrite filter on the outside of the VGA cable doesn't improve VGA signal integrity but rather prevents interference with other electronic devices which is another plus.

Here you go:

Bought a pile of these a while ago when I noticed I had 10 Voodoo cards but only 2 cables. 😁

Are the original passthrough cables considered good quality or are some of the cables mentioned here even better than the original ones?

Cable quality varied greatly between cards. If you look up old reviews the quality has always been subject of discussion. Rule of thumb back then was mostly "thicker cable = better quality". On the other hand thick cables aren't as flexible as thinner ones.
Good VGA cables use internal coax cables for RBG and twisted pair for sync. Cheap cables are almost always thinner because they have twisted pair or straight cables for all signals and only one layer of shielding simultaniously acting as common ground.
Imho the worst cables came with the Miro Hiscore 3D (2) because VGA was adapted to 9pin mini DIN so they used straight internal straight wires for everything.

even though I try to avoid amazon if possible, they're even cheaper there, like I said I got mine for 5€

But on Amazon you also pay for shipping. Those on ebay have free shipping.

Also, they are not the same:
https://www.amazon.de/InLine-17703-InLine%C2% … /dp/B000JBXLQ0/

They are cheaper because they lack e.g. gold-plated connectors. You get what you pay for, or so they say. 😉
