Replaced the stock 92mm fan in my Fujitsu Primergy home server with a new Noctua fan.

The server is now much quieter and the stupid AMD chipset (which runs incredibly hot) is now 10 degrees cooler.

I went to go and try it and realized that It won't fit in my XP system. The GTX 580 covers the other PCI-E slot, so much for that idea. Unless I get a better motherboard, which I have been considering for a while if the right deal comes up, I'll have to stick with the PCI card I have in there currently.

Thanks again for your help though.

Ah, crud. Don't remind me. I thought of installing a dual M.2 nVME PCI-e 4x card into my main desktop, but the PCI-e 1x Wireless AC & Bluetooth card is installed into that slot as my GTX 1660Ti takes over the two bottom PCI-e 1x slots on my motherboard. Planning on upgrading to another board soon (Ryzen) that has 2 M.2 nVME slots and upgrade the storage to all nVME storage (1TB for the OS and 2TB for the SSHD and HDD migration for faster load times). Heck, my 1TB HDD from 10 years ago is still running and no bad marks in SMART or sectors on the hard drive and I might use that for another Original Xbox 1.6b after I do a recap and do a softmod on the system.

I ended up putting the X-fi Titanium HD in my girlfriends Win 10 machine. She has like 2 3" tall USB powered speakers so it should sound awesome =) At least I know the card works fine. Well I know the mini stereo output works fine anyways.

The thing I got a couple days ago isn't directly related to "hardware", but it does sort of have to do with the subject hardware falls under.

Anyway, in my computer programming class, some of the students, myself included, sometimes choose to look over textbooks for the programming language we may learn about, and in class I usually look over one of the BlitzPlus textbooks. I decided I could get my own textbook for game programming in BlitzPlus, so I can study that stuff on my own time.

The book is titled "Game Programming For Teens Second Edition" by Maneesh Sethi.

I got it at a thrift shop a few days ago. There's some some pretty interesting stuff in this book.

Wow, Labelflash DVD burner. I think I never saw one on the wild. Have few LightScibe burners, and still even some media, but I would definitely say Labelflash is more rare.

I've never used LightScribe so I doubt I'll be using LabelFlash. But it's a pretty cool drive.

I had a rush of blood recently after a bad week at work and upgraded my main PC to a Rysen 3600X / MSI x570-A PRO / 16GB RAM. I feel vaguely sad about putting my trusty i5 on the bench after ~10 years of faithful service but it was struggling with Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and I suspected that it wouldn't be able to handle Cyberpunk 2077 either.

Modern hardware generally bores me to tears but I gotta say I'm impressed with this setup - everything is so fast! Booting, web browsing, gaming; it just smashes it all out without breaking a sweat. It's actually a pretty long motherboard so installation in my old Cooler Master Centurion was a bit of a pain in the bum but much to my delight, Windows 10 took a moment to re-install itself and then worked like a charm.

Neither is a 6 core 6 thread CPU comparable to the roughly same price AMD 8 core 16 thread parts in performance, nor does it cost even close to the same level as comparable 4 core 8 thread AMD chips that cost less than 120 bucks.

dropped off a broken monitor at local recycling place... you just leave stuff on a table and go about your merry way. there was an optiplex 3020 MT with an i5 4590 in it so i took that home... not bad for free!

Bought an Optiplex 9020 tower off a friend for $60.
i5-4670, 16GB DDR3-1600, 2TB hard drive, and I can't believe how quiet it is. Even running Prime95 I can barely hear the thing!

I have an old 256GB 840 Pro I can throw in for some added speed. I'm thinking that I'll put this machine down in the workshop, where it will replace an older C2D E8600-based Optiplex 780 as my music/streaming/surfing box.

P6 chip. Triple the speed of the Pentium.

In the Computers section of the local Craigslist, someone listed an Asus VS228H 21.5" monitor for free, the only catch being it had a solid white display. I decided I was up for the challenge of trying to fix it, so I took it.
Looking for any information, I found one forum where the suggested fix was a solid whack on the back of the unit. With nothing to lose, I gave that a shot. It did temporarily fix it! But then the problem returned. I finally disassembled it (not easy), and after several tries, the fix that has so far kept it working was to take off the circuit board on the very top of the display, and remount it; I also cleaned the ribbon cable that attaches to that board, and made sure the tape that holds the cable down wasn't applying tension to where the ribbon cable connects to that circuit board. It's been powered on all day, and the issue hasn't returned.
I'm in the process of building a basic gaming machine for a twelve year old cousin (775, 8 gigs of DDR3, an SSD, a GTS250, and I'm going to upgrade the board to a Xeon X5460) so this will be a perfect match.

you can also use an old router and DD-WRT it and tell it to act as a client bridge
