I know there are other topics with the same CD but none seem to have the problems I do nor I theirs so I started a new topic. Also be warned I'm not exactly computer savvy, I'm amazed I can even use DOSBox to run the CD. So please bear with my ignorance, I'm working to learn as fast as I can.

Problems:

1-I cannot save. No matter how hard I try it tells me 'Game was not saved' I assumed this was because it said E:\LOOM or something similar next to it and I know you cannot save to a disk. I try to click that box to change it to another location but then the game freezes.

2-Audio working... mostly. The sound works great with the exception of the repeating. Every few minutes regardless of where I am the normal sound and voices/ music will continue on as normal but over them will be the voice from the menu of the game saying "Please choose a level" followed by the opening theme and the sound and dialogue from the first cut-scene

3-Mouse tends to get stuck in the upper left hand corner and refuses to move.

4-Bobbin will stutter for no apparent reason. Almost like I'm clicking something repeatedly and instead of just saying a line like "That's strange, the bottom is completely torn off!" he will say "Tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-
tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-that's strange, the bottom is completely torn off!" This is frustrating in particular when he does this for minutes on end and the game will not let you move until he finishes his dialogue.

That's all the major problem's I've had. There are other little flubs but I'm not worried about them.

Other information:
-I run on Windows XP Home Edition
-I've tried the latest three versions of DOSBox
-I've taken very good care of the CD over the years, no scratches or scrapes
-I mount the CD as a CDROM drive and play it directly from there
Sorry to impose on you as such a new member but I was out of alternatives.

Well, first of all, I think you can run Loom with ScummVM (www.scummvm.org), which should work out a lot better than dosbox, so I'd recommend trying that first.

I'm not sure about the problems w/ dosbox. For the saving, you'll need to mount a hard disk folder as well as the CD, so it has somewhere to save, though.

To mount a hard disk folder to save to, could I just create a folder on my desktop to save things into and then mount that?

Well, I'd recommend making a "dosgames" folder in the root of some drive, eg. C:\Dosgames, and then mount that in dosbox as C:\ with "mount c: c:\dosgames"
You could put in on your desktop, but I'm not sure what the path would be.

I've tried using Scummvm for LOOM but it refuses to read the disc or, in fact, recognize that I have a CD drive. I've used it for other games, like the Secret of Monkey Island etc. without a hitch, I'm not sure why it won't take LOOM.

Strange. Maybe copy the contents of the CD to a folder on your hard disk?

The best way to run the Loom CD is to rip the audio CD track to your HDD and play it with ScummVM. The Scumm Tools will let you compress it to an OGG file. If you need help with this you can check with the ScummVM forums on how to do it.

Yes Lofty....as you say that "mount c: c:\games" it's good way for having the games properly "mounted" in virtual unit....

i have installed this way, and the installed games runs good coditions....

(but i don't have Loom CD with spoken text....)
anyway, for NekoMancer....if game have auto-installer for HD installation, install the game at C:\games....and after this, mount c: c:\games (for example) and mount also the CDROM unit for CD sponken text read....

then execute the game from unit mounted (c: c:\games) with the LooMCD CD-Disc inserted in CDROM unit

then test again if game CAN save games,,..or you can listen the spoken audio...etc...

The audio track of the Loom CD is an audio CD track. To copy it to the hard drive It has to be RIPPED to the hard drive in a different format. Of course the CD could be imaged, but I have tried all methods and the best results by far are to be had with ScummVM.
