Nice 286! Do you have any benchmarks of it's preformance? I have a 286 also, it's an AST Bravo 286 Model 5 with an 10 MHZ CPU, an Adlib, an 80287 XL, and VGA. It would be interesting to see how my system compares to yours.

Which Benchmark do you like to see?
But this System isnt build for speed, otherwise I would have chosen a ET3000 and a faster CPU. 80287 is a good idea indeed, will take a look if I have a spare 😉

Pretty sure you can load 1st gen soundfonts (SBK files) in DOS. I don't believe MPU-401 emulation will work without EMM386, though, and titles with native EMU chip support would probably flatten a 286.

The standard GM sbk from Creative sounds surprisingly good in some games, e.g. PQ1, under DOS.

Do you have a Landmark Speed Test 6.0 benchmark? That would be cool to see, along with TOPBENCH, Norton Sysinfo, and maybe 3dbench 1.0. Ill include my system benchmarks below. I got a 4.0 in 3dbench, but I don't have a picture of the score right now. It was a big jump from my 8 MHZ preformance though.

You need a better video board, my 8Mhz IBM AT would probably outperform your machine in actual gameplay.

Yeah, im planning to buy one as i've seen how weak this video board is. Your 8 MHZ system seems a bit slow though according to the benchmark. Mine preformed like a 12 MHZ AT with a 13 MHZ 80287 when I did the test back on 8 MHZ.

I played a bunch of DOS games...in DOSBox running on Tiger running on a dual cpu 1.25GHz PPC G4.

It kinda weirded me out, seeing my old faves running on that thing. The games all looked and sounded normal. Gameplay even felt normal with no input lag at all, which, given the multiple layers of emulation they were going through, was pretty impressive. But right beside the monitor...right beside Corncob 3D, my Corncob 3D...was a super shiny tower with handles and a half eaten apple on its side! It didn't even have the courtesy to beep at startup. No, it instead played some strange chord, which totally gave me the heebie jeebies.

About half an hour later my uneasiness got the best of me, so I put the MDD away and hefted my P200 back onto the desk and man did that ever feel right! Back in my comfort zone, I wasted the rest of my Sunday morning playing Mortal Kombat and Turrican II.

When it comes to these older machines I don't think the newer versions of Landmark are accurate. I think you should try with V2.0, at least this version accurately describes my AT:

Yes, it's four lengths of 2x2 I got for free from a demolition site, four wood screws, some glue, and a piece of MDF.
It has ONE JOB - to hold up an Xbox and the Aopen mini-PC I use to interface with it - so here it is doing it. 😜

Actually this was good practice for a rather cool studio desk expansion I'm working on, since I haven't worked with wood in quite a while. Will post up pics when that project gets underway.

Aaaaand it fits perfectly, exactly where I needed it to go. Success!

Now to re-wire everything & start on part 2...

Video is of course very slow as its a 8-bit EGA with VGA output. CPU seems to be OK - or to fast for a 286-12 😁

finished my 686 build and installed callus emulator for dos , played some final fight 😁

Nice! Your CPU seems to do very well. I think a math co-processor would be a cool upgrade, but if you don't have anything that uses it, I wouldn't spend $35 on an 80287 XL like I did. I ordered a Tseng ET4000AX 1 MB ISA card for my 286, so when that comes, maybe my system will be a little bit more competitive. I'll hand over the benchmarks with that when it comes. 🙂

Disassembled the compaq LTE lite/25, did discover three surprises, one is 8mb card installed and DC-DC board had 5A fuse blown and burnt tantalum capacitor (still shorted) so I'll have to repair the DC-DC board. This is old old school SMD fat capacitor, it has a pin on one end for polarity and orange body. Hybrid thick film board too.
The standby batter pack didn't leak juice. Oh cool. 😀

What I intend exactly was repair anything that is not working I come across during collecting stuff. Well, since I repair things is my career was CRT and LCD, consumer electronic and computer repair. My current job is micro-soldering on cell phones and game consoles, computer at current work now. 😀
Also my hobby is repairing stuff too.
