I'm currently running Windows Me on my Gateway Solo 9300 PRO. It's running well so far since I just installed it yesterday, but someone online told me that Windows Me suffers from memory leaks and that it could potentially damage my hardware. I had heard about Windows Me memory leaks before, but not permanent damage caused by it. Is this true? From what I understand, a reboot should always resolve the issue (until another leak occurs which would need a reboot as well). I've used Windows Me on a few machines over the past few years and never had any problems.

There is no need to worry about it. In worst case the computer will hang. But I'm not even sure if ME is any less stable than Win98SE.

There are memory leaking bugs in all versions of the Win9x family, especially in the GDI sub-system. It will cause the system to simply crash at some point, even when it's completely idle. It won't ever cause any hardware damage, however.

Thanks guys! Yeah, Windows Me has never given me any trouble so I figured I was safe. People can hate it if they want to, but my personal experience with it has been positive 😀

if for any reason you reinstall winme, just leave out the 'restore point' feature. my PC was much more stable without it.

Interesting. I use System Restore quite often on Windows XP and later so I have been planning on using it with Me. I installed the patch that allows System Restore to function past September of 2001 (there was a weird bug in Me that broke System Restore around that time). Was the stability improvement major or minor?
