I've picked up a Soundblaster 2.0 CT1350B. It's revision is 049151. It's got the CT1336 chip not the "A" version. It's got a "full sized" YM3812 chip.

Will these two sound chips, plus this "controller" chip work and give me CMS sound?

yes, if you program the GAL chip with suntac's code it will work just fine
personally I'd just take the kit from suntac himself directly: https://www.ebay.ie/itm/Improved-Creative-Sou … FcAAOSw91JcF5t6

Thanks, that does look like the most sensible suggestion. Sadly the card is broken - it produces constant cracking and whines in accordance with what the PC is doing. During the RAM check it screams, during Post it almost sounds like a HDD, when sat on the C: prompt it whines, which stops when I change my active directory to the A: drive. When I use the test-sbc.exe which detects the irq and lets you play a sample FM syth and sound blaster sound effect, it makes... noise but nothing like what it should.

I fixed it in the end - the power supply didn't have -5v rail so I've swapped in an old one.

You're right that it doesn't work on "new" systems. I tried it first on my Slot 1 PC (because that is what I had set up) and it wasn't detected at all. I then set up my 386SX PC which it was detected on fine. Now, with the proper power supply it's working great!

Incompatibility with newer systems also has to do with the OPL2 itself.
On fast systems, the delay coded into old games code from the 80s is too short.
OPL3 and OPL4 can handle I/O with little to no delay coded in.

I would say that with SB 2.0, such noise is perfectly normal 😁
