From good to shit there are several FM Synth implementations in sound hardware. OPL3 is often regarded as the bar to beat but personally I do not view it as the pinnacle of the subject matter. ı always thought ESFM sounded authentic enough while often being more pleasantly filtered. Lately however my favorite has become the CrystalFM found in ISA chipsets like the CS4236. It has a certain charming warm sound that I just find more comfortable to listen to.
