They did that in 2017 already. They are free since then.

Actually most of these benchmarks were made free long before 2017. 3DMark Vantage was added to the legacy page in 2017.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Well, pirated versions were circulating for decades now, so who cares =P

Well, it's a nice gesture of them, even if it's also free advertising. The software was unlikely to make any money, but if retro folks are using the software for benchmarking and stress testing, including those who make online content, then others will be more likely to think favorably of 3D Mark when they see the current version for sale.

Cool, looks like they're still updating this page with "new" ones too. 3DMark 2011 was posted within the last couple months at least.
