I am building a 486 (Tomato 4DPS with 133Mhx AX5x85-P75) system and I have a SoundBlaster CT3600 to put into the machine.

What driver do I use? Do I use the AWE32 drivers? Basic Sound Blaster 16 drivers? In the Vogons driver library there are a LOT of Sound Blaster drivers but I cant figure out what to download and use.

A link to floppy images would be best as Im using a GoTek.

Yes those should work. The CT3600 is a SB32 PNP as is the ct3670. You need to use the CTCM pnp driver if running under DOS or Win 3.x or on an older non-pnp BIOS motherboard.

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

I haven't tried this but I suspect they won't because your card is a SB32 PnP card and those drivers are used for a card based on the SB AWE64 chip.
A quick google search delivers this info site:

Good luck! 🙂

Hmm well I have both cards and they both are labeled as SB32 PNP by Creative, sure one has a AWE32 label of one chip on front while other has EMU label but have not found the drivers for any SB32 or AWE32 not work with either. Of course you could be right but I always use same driver disks for SB32 and AWE 32 and have never had an issue except with those non -PNP (like CT3930 that do not need the CTCM cause they are jumper set not PNP)

AWE64 drivers worked fine with AWE32 cards in my experience, though AWE64 mainly didn't ship on floppies (which is preferred by OP)

I got it working - using the Phils computer lab link, all I needed was ctcmbbs.exe which unpacked the PnP config setup. I copied it over the hard drive (cf drive actually), ran the setup/install and it identified the card and configured it.

I’ve got some more experimenting to do but it’s at least putting out sound!

Im not sure the CTCMBBS drivers are using all the features of the card, but it DOES work and DOS games recognize it as a SB and as an ADLib.

This has been an interesting process, it has been a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnng time since Ive messed with any of this. You forget how finicky and temperamental computers back then really were. The biggest issue I am having is finding proper drivers for everything with the sound card being the most confusing. Creative made about a zillion different models of Sound Blasters!!

Ive decided to try and recreate many of the computers of my past. Though I never had a 486 this fast, the best 486 I had was a DX266 although I do believe I dropped a Pentium Overdrive into it back in the day. The next computer up to rebuild is my first Pentium class machine bought at the end of 1995. It was either a P54C @ 120MHz or a P54CS @ 133MHz.

Sound Blaster cards don't need any drivers. They just work once they are initialized. Run CTCM on non-PNP systems, and DIAGNOSE / AWEUTIL to init the card after that. That's it.
