I approved this post. BUT, Muz, please elaborate: what kind of games do you like? There are way too many games and way too many opinions 😀
My opinion: start with Ultima 7

Hello, Joshua. Would you like to play a game of chess?

DOOM DOOM and more DOOM
EDIT: DOOM II DOOM II and more DOOM II
Life? Don't talk to me about life.
You also need to specify what type of hardware you have or, are you planning on playing on an emulator?
Some of my favourites are the Sierra & Lucasarts adventure games, Test Drive 1 & 2, the first Need for Speed, Doom 1 & 2, Duke Nukem 3D & Rise is the Triad, to name a few.
Dune 2, Civilization 1 and Wolfenstein 3D - Im very partial to these three games because they were the best games that worked on my 286 back in the day.
Good old Muz. Making us think we're part of a Turing test since he made his first post.
Maybe you like Angband and Zangband?
All hail the Great Capacitor Brand Finder
I find it comforting in these troubling times that Muz is still out there, going about his daily routine and pausing occasionally as he wonders things like, "what gold old DOS games should I, Muz, be playing?"
Jill of the Jungle is another classic.
Life? Don't talk to me about life.
The Quests. Police, Space, King's Quest games from Sierra. Mandatory DOS gaming.

Everyone's going to have their favorites, and some people won't like or recommend games that are considered classics. A little more detail in your question would be appreciated. 😀
I'm an RPG nut, so most of my recommendations would be in that genre. Here's three non-RPG DOS games I'd recommend:
-Dark Forces (Lucasarts)
-Crusader: No Remorse/Regret (Origin Systems)
-Wings of Glory (Origin Systems)
The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

The original Tetris. Get version 1. Version 3.12 has pointless features you don't need and some annoying bugs.

Any DOS game that has no quit function and requires you to reboot.
Someone should make a list of those.

I recently threw a copy of that away. It was on one of those 'Award Winners' compilations that came to me as part of a bundle of stuff. I didn't like the look of any of the games so just tossed it. You're saying I made a mistake?

Threw away? You wouldn't at least donate a game you don't want to a thrift store or something? I don't think I'd throw any game away unless the disc was totally trashed.
At first I just threw away the box, intending to keep the disks (space is limited), but after looking up the games on Moby and not liking the sound of them, I got rid of the disks as well.
