I don't know what it is, but I dig those Socket 423 boards. I have one that has 768MB RDRAM (requires all 4 to be filled, or 2 filled with 2 terminators, much like SCSI cables requiring those termination ends to allow the drives to be recognized).

did a little research.
the hsf retention mechanism is connected to the metal plate.
according to anandtech, it was part of a new atx 2.03 case spec where the hsf retention mechanism would mount directly to the case https://www.anandtech.com/show/764/3
the back plate is then optional if your case is not compliant with this new spec.
i've seen these 4 holes in a few cases (photo below) but, they are rotated 90 degrees and higher up.
it looks like asus just said f*** you guys, we'll put it wherever we want and make you use this giant plate instead.
so... not optional.

Got this yesterday, slotket with p3 800. Slotkets are always good to have around.

Then something wierd. I have a bookshelf in my computer-room, and just in passing I saw this and pulled it out. I have no idea when I got it or where. Can't remember it at all. Makes me wonder if I have other unknown treasures hiding in my room. 😁

A nice Chaintech 486SPM. Support for, 3.3V CPUs, 128mb ram and 1024k cache. I have still to check if it works, my bench is full of other stuff atm. And it looks brand new, no signs of being mounted.

Asus did this with several boards from that era. My XG-DLS has a similar plate, and its whole purpose in life is to properly mount the heatsinks for those 2 massive slot-2 heatsinks.

The plate is 100% required, unless you can get the proper stand-offs on your case to support the cpu heatsinks.

That's a nice lot! Assuming you can find a Super Socket 7 board (hell, if you can't, I have one I'd part with if you don't mind AT), you can do a lot of fun experiments comparing your various Socket 7 CPUs.

those lots sell for soooo much more here unfortunately... even if it's just scrap CPUs.

Thank you, I feel lucky getting this lot. The Shuttle Hot-569 was the closest I ever got to owning an SS7 board. No 100Mhz front side, but I was able to get a decent overclock on my Pentium 200. My brother had FIC VA-503 board, but I never made the jump as I had paid a premium for the 569. I saved my pennies before ultimately getting on the AMD bandwagon with Socket A. Good times!

Thanks for the offer on the SS7! For now, I have a couple of Socket 7 boards to play with. An Asus VX97 machine I saved from the scrap pile and I dug out the motherboard from the first machine I built. A PCChips M575 with the "TXPro" chipset. That said, don't be surprised if you get a PM from me. 😀

I got two computers in yesterday but didn't get a chance to take pictures of them until today. I posted about them in here before but I figure people would like pics! The Compaq Presario 850 turned out to be a 486DX2-50 just like I expected, and just like I feared the power supply is stone dead. Probing a 4pin Molex drive connector resulted in 0.00V on both the 5V and 12V lines. And this is a weird proprietary PSU with non-standard AT power connectors so I guess I have to attempt to fix it...

I also got the eMachines eTower 366c in the same day, this one's a much happier story. Booted right up the first try without any issue, aside from a dead CMOS battery. I just need to throw in a hard drive and install an OS.

Believe it or not, this is the first time I've been able to find a full Cyrix system that wasn't being sold by an overly optimistic eBay seller with a $200 price tag.

Another card I've been after for awhile to the GPU collection!
